Police in Florida are searching for a man who stole a car containing 30 vials of the COVID-19 vaccine. According to authorities in Plant City, a male wearing a light colored hoodie stole the vehicle from the parking lot at Strawberry Festival Grounds on Wednesday.

Officials said $10 thousand worth of doses were held in the vehicle ahead of distribution at the city’s vaccination center.

Capt. Jerry Stwan of the Plant City Police Department added he believes a person walking by saw a crime of opportunity and then stole the car.

“Whether it was intentional or just by chance that the vaccines were stolen, I’m sure there will be lessons learned for better security measures for these vaccines,” Stwan stated. “They are very precious to a lot of people in our state.”

Officials have issued a nationwide alert and the investigation is ongoing.
