Biden AG initially dismisses Hunter Biden special counsel, then appoints one weeks later.
Attorney General Merrick Garland Appoints Special Counsel in Hunter Biden Investigation
Last week, Attorney General Merrick Garland made a significant move in the investigation into Hunter Biden. He appointed U.S. attorney David Weiss as special counsel, stating that it was in the “public interest” for Weiss to take on this role. This decision came as a surprise, considering Garland’s previous statement that there was no need for a special counsel because Weiss already had complete authority and independence in the case.
“Weiss had, in fact, more authority than a special counsel would have had,” Garland explained during a June press conference. “He had and has complete authority… to bring a case anywhere he wants, in his discretion.”
However, Garland’s explanation took a different turn on Friday. He revealed that he appointed Weiss as special counsel after Weiss himself stated that “his investigation had reached a stage at which he should continue his work as a special counsel.”
This appointment of Weiss as special counsel has raised eyebrows, as it suggests that the Justice Department may bring new charges against Hunter Biden. The first son is currently under investigation for tax fraud and gun charges. Republicans, however, remain skeptical about the impartiality of the investigation, especially considering Weiss’s previous involvement in negotiating a plea deal with Hunter Biden.
- Appointment as special counsel
- Negotiated a plea deal
- Plea deal fell apart
Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee expressed their doubts about Weiss’s appointment, stating, “David Weiss can’t be trusted, and this is just a new way to whitewash the Biden family’s corruption. Weiss has already signed off on a sweetheart plea deal that was so awful and unfair that a federal judge rejected it.”
