Joe Biden defended his son, Hunter, stating he did nothing wrong, just weeks before Hunter’s guilty plea.
President Biden Defends Son Hunter Amid Plea Deal
President Biden Stands by His Son
Just six weeks before Hunter Biden pleaded guilty to two tax crimes and admitted to the facts of a gun charge Tuesday, his father, President Joe Biden, insisted that Hunter “did nothing wrong” in an interview with MSNBC.
“My son has done nothing wrong. I trust him,” Biden told host Stephanie Ruhle in one of his few sit-down interviews since being sworn into office. “I have faith in him and it impacts my presidency by making me feel proud of him.”

The Washington Post reported Tuesday that the 53-year-old son of the president will plead guilty to two tax crimes and admit to the facts of a gun charge in a deal negotiated with Delaware U.S. Attorney David Weiss. The deal means Biden will plead guilty to misdemeanors for failing to pay about $100,000 in taxes for 2017 and for failing to pay a similar amount for 2018. He is not expected to face any jail time.
Sources told the Post that prosecutors will recommend two years of probation for Biden, and he will enter a diversion program upon admitting the illegal purchase of a firearm in 2018, meaning he will not technically be pleading guilty to the gun charge. The gun charge could be revoked from his record upon completion of the diversion program, according to the Post.
The president said Tuesday afternoon that he remains “very proud of [his] son” when asked about Hunter Biden’s plea deal. Following reports of the deal, the White House counsel’s office released a statement, saying, “The President and First Lady love their son and support him as he continues to rebuild his life.”
Republicans, including former President Donald Trump, were enraged after hearing that Hunter Biden would be getting off with “a mere traffic ticket,” arguing that the plea deal proves the U.S. is being guided by a “two-tiered system of justice.”
“Wow! The corrupt Biden DOJ just cleared up hundreds of years of criminal liability by giving Hunter Biden a mere traffic ticket,” Trump said on Truth Social. “Our system is BROKEN!”
“So Hunter Biden gets a special plea deal, slap on the wrist – probably won’t do a day of time – while DOJ charges Trump as a spy and tries to put him in prison forever. Two standards of ‘justice,’” Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) said.
House Committee on Oversight and Accountability Chairman James Comer (R-KY) expressed his frustration with the Biden plea deal, but promised that his investigation into the Biden family will continue.
“Let’s be clear: the Department of Justice’s charges against President Biden’s son Hunter reveals a two-tiered system of justice,” Comer said. “Hunter Biden is getting away with a slap on the wrist when growing evidence uncovered by the House Oversight Committee reveals the Bidens engaged in a pattern of corruption, influence peddling, and possibly bribery. These charges against Hunter Biden and sweetheart plea deal have no impact on the Oversight Committee’s investigation. We will not rest until the full extent of President Biden’s involvement in the family’s schemes are revealed.”
