SF Giants ashamed to feature anti-Catholic group, Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.
The Dodgers and the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence
The Los Angeles Dodgers have found themselves in hot water for their association with the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, an anti-Catholic LGBTQ group. But this isn’t the first time a California baseball team has faced criticism for working with the controversial group.
The Giants’ Apology
In 1995, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence participated in the Giants’ “Until There’s a Cure” AIDS benefit game. When the Catholic League expressed their disapproval, then-team president Peter Magowan apologized profusely and promised to implement stricter screening procedures in the future.
“It was most regrettable, as their acts of mockery not only were unfair to the Catholic Church, but also were a distraction to the worthy focus of the day,” Magowan wrote in a letter to the Catholic League.
The Dodgers’ Apology
Fast forward to 2023, and the Dodgers are facing similar criticism for their association with the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. After uninviting the group to their annual Pride Night due to Catholic backlash, the Dodgers quickly reissued the invitation following feedback from their diverse communities and conversations with the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.
“The Los Angeles Dodgers would like to offer our sincerest apologies to the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, members of the LGBTQ community and their friends and family,” the team said in a statement.

The Backlash
However, the Dodgers’ apology did not sit well with everyone. The Catholic League launched a campaign to boycott the team’s Pride Night game, and some MLB players spoke out against the team’s decision to stand by the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.
“To invite and honor a group that makes a blatant and deeply offensive mockery of my religion, and the religion of over 4 million people in Los Angeles county alone, undermines the values of respect and inclusivity that should be upheld by any organization,” said Washington Nationals pitcher Trevor Williams in a statement.
Conclusion
The Dodgers’ association with the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence has sparked controversy and backlash, highlighting the ongoing tension between religious beliefs and LGBTQ rights. It remains to be seen how the team will navigate this issue in the future.
