Florida university professor fired for ‘flawed’ studies on racial bias in criminal justice.
Florida State University Fires Professor for Research Misconduct
A shocking case of research misconduct has led to the termination of a professor at Florida State University. The university fired criminologist Eric Stewart after uncovering a series of studies that allegedly perpetuated racial discrimination within the criminal justice system.
According to the termination letter posted online by the nonprofit group Retraction Watch, Stewart was dismissed due to “extreme negligence in basic data management, resulting in an unprecedented number of articles retracted.” Florida State University provost James J. Clark expressed concern over the “numerous erroneous and false narratives” present in at least six of Stewart’s studies, which have had a detrimental impact on the field of criminology at a national level. Clark even described the damage caused as approaching the catastrophic.
One particularly alarming case involved a study published in the academic journal Criminology in 2011. As reported by the College Fix, editors discovered that Stewart had manipulated data to inaccurately demonstrate that as black and Hispanic populations increased, the surrounding white populations desired more racially discriminatory sentencing. This study was subsequently retracted in 2019. In fact, a total of five other criminology studies related to race and co-authored by Stewart have also been retracted, according to the College Fix.
This incident adds to a growing list of left-wing academics who have faced consequences for research misconduct. Stanford University president Marc Tessier-Lavigne recently resigned after a law firm discovered manipulated data in multiple papers he co-authored. Additionally, a Harvard professor who specializes in studying honesty was credibly accused of using fraudulent data in her research, as reported by the Chronicle of Higher Education.
Justin Pickett, a co-author of Stewart’s retracted papers and a professor at SUNY Albany, publicly accused Stewart of fraud, as reported by the College Fix. Pickett suggested that fraud was the most likely explanation for the data irregularities and challenged Stewart to prove otherwise.
