Following “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” Box Office Disaster, Jason Momoa Attempts to Stave off Similar Disaster for “Aquaman 2”
Jason Momoa is attempting to do some damage control for his upcoming movie, Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom. This may be his last appearance as the character, as he might find new life as The Main Man in the DCU. Momoa is following in the footsteps of the Shazam! Fury Of The Gods cast and director, who did some hand-wringing before the movie’s release.
Via GamesRadar, he tells Total Film that he hopes people will see Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom despite Shazam! Fury Of The Gods/2 performing poorly at the box office, bad test screenings of the former, and time running out for the DCEU. Momoa pitched the sequel’s fun factor instead, saying, “It’s fun. I really enjoy doing comedy.”
Rumors suggest that most of the film’s comedy comes from Momoa and Patrick Wilson, who returns as Orm to team up with his brother and rival. Momoa confirmed this, saying, “There’s some really funny stuff with Patrick Wilson. I really adore him. We had a great time working together. It’s like we’re brothers. There’s a lot of cool stuff happening in this one.”
In the interview, Momoa is confident that Aquaman will continue to play a role in the future of the DCU. His new boss, Peter Safran, who produced both Aquaman and Shazam!, is a dear friend, and “won’t let him down.” He said, “It’s on, bro – there’s no one bigger than Aquaman!”
However, early feedback for The Lost Kingdom is not as positive as the first film, with rumors of the movie being boring and terrible, as well as reports of walkouts during test screenings. There is also social media chatter that Amber Heard’s part is still intact.
If the movie falls short, Arthur Curry may be benched while Momoa may only get to play Lobo when he returns. This is the rumored plan, despite Momoa’s statement that he can play more than one character at a time.
