California SNAP payments for September, worth up to $1,691, expire tomorrow.
California Ends September Distribution of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
California is set to conclude its distribution of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) for the month of September by this weekend. Families who receive SNAP, also known as food stamps, can expect benefits up to $1,691. In California, the federal program is referred to as CalFresh and payments are issued starting from the first of the month until September 10th. The distribution of payments is based on the recipient’s case number.
Payment Schedule Based on Case Number
- If the case number ends in 1, CalFresh benefits were available on September 1st.
- If the case number ends in 2, CalFresh benefits were available on September 2nd.
- By September 10th, those with a case number ending in zero will receive their payment.
The exact payment amount received by each household depends on various factors, including household size, income limits, and additional assets. On average, individuals in California receive $196 per month through the CalFresh program.
Maximum SNAP Amounts
- Household of one: Maximum payment of $281
- Household of four: Maximum payment of $939
- Household of eight: Maximum payment of $1,691
- For each additional household member past eight, the program adds $211.
Most California households must have a monthly gross income at or below 130% of the federal poverty level to be eligible for CalFresh. For example, a family of one must have a monthly income limit of $1,473, while a household of three must have a limit of $2,495, and a household of six must have a limit of $4,029. However, households with an elderly or disabled member have a higher eligibility limit of 200%. For instance, a family of one can have a monthly income limit of $2,266, a household of three can have a limit of $3,840, and a household of six can have a limit of $6,200.
Around 13% of California’s population, which amounts to nearly 5 million Californians, receives CalFresh assistance each month, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.
