Colorado Prepares to Distribute SNAP Payments for September

Colorado is gearing up to distribute payments to⁢ participants of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), also known as food stamps, in just four days. This program ‍provides crucial support to low-income⁤ families and residents by helping them purchase groceries each month.

The program in Colorado runs from September 1st to September 10th, with payment dates varying based on the last digit of a recipient’s Social Security ‍number.‌ Thanks to the 2023 schedule,⁢ recipients can expect their payments to arrive around the same time ⁣every month.

Factors Affecting SNAP Benefits

The‌ amount of SNAP benefits received by Coloradans depends on several factors, including household size, ⁣income, earned income,‌ and unearned income.‍ For individuals, the maximum monthly payment is $281. A four-person family can receive ‌up to $939, while a household of eight could receive a maximum payment of‍ $1,691. Each additional member beyond eight adds a maximum of $211‌ to the payment.

Qualifying for SNAP is within reach for most Colorado households with incomes ⁤below 200% of the federal poverty level. Gross income limits for eligibility include $2,266 per⁤ month for a one-person household, $4,626 for a four-person household, and $7,772 for a household of eight.

Using SNAP Benefits

Payments are loaded onto an electronic benefit transfer (EBT) card, which functions like a debit card and can be used at approved stores. Eligible grocery items such as bread, dairy products, meat and poultry, and beverages can be purchased using the EBT ⁢card. However, pet food, alcohol, and household‌ items like soap ⁣and paper products are not eligible for purchase.

According to the Center on Budget and ⁣Policy Priorities, approximately 540,300 people in Colorado, roughly 9% of the state’s population,⁣ receive food⁢ stamps.

SNAP is administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture,‌ and there are typically minor changes to the program each⁣ year. Starting this Friday, new eligibility rules will go into effect for SNAP beneficiaries.
