Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Benefits in Virginia

Exciting news for recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program in Virginia! Your monthly benefits will be arriving soon.

SNAP benefits, also known as food stamps, are distributed from the first through the seventh of every month. The distribution date is determined by the last digit of your case number.

Important Distribution Dates:

  • Case numbers ending in 0-3: Benefits will be available on July 1.
  • Case numbers ending in 4-5: Benefits will be available on July 4.
  • Case numbers ending in 6-9: Benefits will be available on July 7.

In the beautiful state of Virginia, the average benefit payment per household member is $181. Approximately 9% of the population receives assistance through SNAP, with a total of around 794,600 recipients.

SNAP benefits can be used for a variety of food items, including seeds and food-producing plants. The Virginia EBT card, an electronic benefit transfer card, allows beneficiaries to conveniently purchase eligible items at stores.

However, it’s important to note that SNAP benefits cannot be used for non-food items, alcohol, tobacco, medicines, gardening items, cleaning or paper products, pet food, or prepared hot foods, as per the state’s SNAP program.

The maximum monthly income permitted to be eligible for SNAP in Virginia depends on household size. For a household of one, the maximum monthly income is $2,265. For a household of five, the maximum monthly income is $5,412.
