Using SNAP benefits for food delivery service

DoorDash Expands Food Access with SNAP and EBT Payments

DoorDash, the popular food delivery service, is making it easier for SNAP participants to access groceries through their platform. In select markets, users can now use their Electric Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to pay for eligible groceries and have them delivered right to their doorstep.

Bringing Food Access to More Communities

DoorDash is committed to expanding food access and has partnered with over 4,000 grocery and convenience locations, including well-known stores like ALDI, Albertsons, Meijer, Safeway, and select 7-Eleven stores. Starting in July, many of these merchants will begin accepting SNAP and EBT payments through the DoorDash app.

Free DashPass Membership for SNAP Recipients

As an added benefit, SNAP recipients who use DoorDash will receive a two-month free DashPass membership. DashPass is a subscription service that offers perks like $0 delivery fees on eligible orders that meet minimum subtotals. This membership will help SNAP recipients save money and make their grocery deliveries even more affordable.

“The rise of on-demand grocery delivery has had a transformational impact on food access,” says Fuad Hannon, vice president of New Verticals at DoorDash. “This is especially true for vulnerable populations, including seniors, people living in food deserts, and those facing disability or transportation barriers.”

Reaching Those in Need

DoorDash estimates that this new feature will benefit over 2.3 million people living in USDA-defined food deserts and over 4.3 million people living in communities where over 1 in 10 households receive SNAP/EBT benefits. By accepting SNAP and EBT payments, DoorDash is helping to reduce food insecurity and connect people to the groceries and essential items they need.

To add their EBT card as a payment method, SNAP beneficiaries can simply go to the DoorDash app and navigate to the Program Cards section. It’s as easy as adding a debit or credit card. Once added, DoorDash will provide a unique link for SNAP recipients to redeem their two-month free DashPass membership.

“We’re proud to partner with these merchants to offer SNAP recipients access to quality groceries conveniently through our platform,” says Hannon. “Through the power of local delivery, enabling SNAP/EBT payments can make a profound impact on reducing food insecurity and connecting people to groceries and the essential items they need.”
