Rhode Island to Provide Direct Payments to SNAP Participants
Rhode Island is set to distribute direct payments to all residents participating in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) for the month of August. These payments, commonly known as food stamps, will be worth up to $1,691 for beneficiaries enrolled in the federal assistance program. The distribution of benefits for the upcoming month is scheduled for Tuesday.
Maximum Payment Amounts
- Household of eight: $1,691
- Household of four: $939
- Household of one: $281
For each additional member in a Rhode Island household, SNAP provides an extra $211. On average, each household member receives $183 per month.
Rhode Island has over 167,000 SNAP participants, accounting for approximately 18% of the state’s population based on 2019 data. Nationally, around 41.2 million people, equivalent to 12% of the population, receive food stamps as of fiscal year 2022.
SNAP recipients in Rhode Island can access their monthly benefits through an electronic benefit transfer (EBT) card. This card functions like a debit card and can be used at various locations, including grocery stores, convenience stores, supermarkets, farmers’ markets, and participating online retailers.
