Foreign EV maker recalls entire first batch of cars shipped to US due to safety issue.

VinFast’s Electric SUVs Recalled in the US Due to Safety Issue

A Vietnamese carmaker’s entry into the American electric car market has hit a pothole, with all of the first batch of vehicles sent to the US under a recall notice. VinFast’s VF 8 vehicles suffer from an issue with the multifunction head unity display, which is the dashboard display. At times, the unit goes blank.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration warned that “a blank MHU display will not show critical safety information, such as the speedometer or warning lights.”

The VF8, an SUV, sells for $49,000, according to the Kelley Blue Book.

TheDrive reported that “the failure of the display is considered a safety issue” as it displays critical information like vehicle speed and warning lights. The software update to fix the glitch could be problematic.

VinFast Recalls First Batch of US-Bound EVs Over Safety Risk

Vietnamese automaker VinFast has issued a recall for its first batch of electric vehicles (EVs) shipped to the US due to a software glitch that could cause the screen to go blank, increasing the risk of a crash. The recall affects 999 vehicles, of which 111 were sold to customers and 153 were in use for fleets. The issue affects vehicles made between July 27 and Nov. 25. VinFast is aware of 18 reported occurrences on 14 vehicles, but the company is not aware of any field reports of incidents. The company is issuing the recall out of an abundance of caution.

The fix for the issue is an over-the-air software update that consists of a watchdog mechanism that determines if the communications error has occurred and reinitializes the head unit’s software if so. VinFast reports that the update can rectify the issue in under 200 ms. However, some owners may not consider this a perfect fix as the screen momentarily blanks, which is long enough for the human eye to perceive.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) report on the problem said that VinFast is not aware of any field reports of incidents. The company is issuing this recall out of an abundance of caution. The recall affects vehicles made between July 27 and Nov. 25.

Foreign Electric Vehicle Manufacturer Recalls Entire First Batch of Cars Shipped to US Over Serious Safety Issue

Mark your calendars, folks! May 25, 2023 is the day VinFast will never forget. It’s the day they recalled their entire first batch of cars shipped to the US due to a serious safety issue.

Back in February, VinFast had already recalled 2,781 vehicles sold in Vietnam because of a front brake issue. But it seems like the problem is more widespread than they initially thought.

VinFast recently started selling electric vehicles in California, and they’ve already sent 2,097 VF8 cars to the US. Unfortunately, the recalled cars made up the first batch sent.

What Went Wrong?

Details are still scarce, but it’s clear that VinFast discovered a serious safety issue that affects all the cars in their first batch shipped to the US. The company has yet to release a statement on what exactly went wrong, but they’ve assured customers that they’re working on a fix.

What Happens Next?

If you’re one of the unlucky customers who received a recalled VinFast car, the company will contact you directly to arrange for a repair. In the meantime, it’s best to avoid driving the car until it’s been fixed.

It’s a tough blow for VinFast, who was hoping to make a splash in the US market with their electric vehicles. But safety should always come first, and it’s good to see the company taking swift action to address the issue.

Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
