Foreign post delivered to Hunter Biden’s art buyer linked to corruption and foreign influence.
The Controversial Appointment of a Wealthy Democrat Donor to a Federal Commission
The recent appointment of Elizabeth Hirsch Naftali, a wealthy Democrat donor, to the Commission for the Preservation of America’s Heritage Abroad has raised eyebrows and sparked concerns. This federal commission has long been associated with corruption, secrecy, and the advancement of its members’ financial interests.
Naftali, who has made significant contributions to Democrat politicians over the years, joins a position that is familiar to Hunter Biden. In 2015, President Barack Obama appointed Hunter’s business partner, Eric Schwerin, to the same commission.
One might wonder why Hunter’s associates are drawn to this notoriously corrupt commission. It seems that the lack of attention paid to it allows for questionable practices to thrive. This government agency has seen directors pocketing six-figure salaries while building lucrative foreign relationships. In fact, emails found on Hunter’s abandoned laptop reveal that Schwerin personally requested a spot on the commission after Obama’s election.
At the time of Schwerin’s appointment, the commission’s executive director, Jeffrey Farrow, was earning a substantial salary for what amounted to a one-day-a-week job. However, it was discovered that Farrow spent 90% of his time running a for-profit international lobbying firm out of the government office. This dual role raised concerns about the misuse of a public office for private gain.
The situation surrounding Farrow’s actions is reminiscent of the controversy surrounding Hunter’s foreign lobbying work. The New York Times described it as someone “burrowed so deeply in the government” while engaging in lobbying and representing foreign governments simultaneously.
The commission has also been uncooperative with government investigations. It limited the scope of the General Services Administration inspector general’s investigation and prohibited the referral of findings for criminal prosecution without its consent. The final inspector general report was hidden from the public until Senator Ron Johnson requested it as part of a Senate Homeland Security investigation.
The report revealed that individuals associated with the commission used it as a personal piggy bank, routinely falsifying paperwork. Former chairman Warren Miller was found to have used the office and its benefits for personal use and to run a law firm. Additionally, the commission designated employees as contractors to bypass federal rules, even though they were acting as employees and signing contracts on behalf of the agency.
One whistleblower, Katarina Ryan, filed a complaint against Farrow’s actions, resulting in her being put on leave while Farrow continued to be employed. The Office of Special Counsel (OSC) informed President Obama that the commission’s chair, Leslie Weiss, had obstructed their investigation by sharing its details with the suspects.
Despite the controversy surrounding the commission, Naftali’s appointment raises further concerns. While the exact timing of the art purchase is unknown, Naftali was appointed to the federal post eight months after Hunter’s first art opening. Hunter’s artwork sells for exorbitant prices, and it has been revealed that he learned the identity of at least two buyers, contradicting the Biden administration’s claim that only the art gallery would know the purchasers.
Naftali’s significant contributions to Biden and her frequent visits to the White House have also raised questions about potential favoritism and influence. Her appointment to this controversial commission further adds to the scrutiny surrounding the Biden administration’s connections and decision-making processes.
