Ex-AG Barr slams Trump: ‘Our nation can’t be a therapy session for a troubled man.’
Former Attorney General William Barr Unleashes on Trump
Former Attorney General William Barr didn’t hold back during a recent interview, where he criticized former President Donald Trump for his conduct and alleged criminal behavior.
Barr made these remarks during an appearance on CBS News’s “Face The Nation” while discussing the federal indictment against Trump and two other criminal cases.
This comes after Trump publicly attacked Barr last week, hurling insults at him after Barr provided an unfavorable analysis of Trump’s legal situation. Trump called Barr “a slob,” “a stupid person,” “a coward,” “a low life,” and even a “gutless pig.”
As a former attorney general who served under both Trump and former President George H.W. Bush, Barr acknowledged that Trump had been a victim of unfair witch hunts in the past.
“But,” Barr added, “that doesn’t change the fact that he’s also a fundamentally flawed person who engages in reckless conduct. This leads to calamitous situations like the one we’re witnessing now, which are not only destructive but also harmful to any political cause he associates with. And this situation is entirely of his own making. He had no right to those documents. The government tried for over a year, with respect and in a quiet manner, to retrieve them, which was crucial. However, he simply played games with them.”
Barr firmly stated that Trump had “no legal basis” to retain the documents and believes that Trump lied to the Department of Justice.
Regarding the criminal obstruction charges against Trump, Barr emphasized that they are “very strong” because “a lot of the evidence comes from his own lawyers.”
Disputing Trump’s idea of being shielded by the Presidential Records Act, Barr explained that the “whole purpose” of the statute, passed after the Watergate scandal, was “to prevent presidents from taking official documents out of the White House.”
When asked about Trump’s potential sentence if convicted, Barr didn’t provide a direct answer but expressed his discomfort with the idea of a former president serving time in prison.
“Trump has many good qualities, and he accomplished some good things,” Barr acknowledged. “But the fact of the matter is, he is a consummate narcissist. He constantly engages in reckless conduct that puts his political followers, as well as the conservative and Republican agenda, at risk.”
Barr firmly stated that Trump “will always put his own interests and gratifying his own ego ahead of everything else, including the country’s interest. There’s no question about it.”
According to Barr, the current situation Trump finds himself in is “a perfect example of that.”
“He’s like a defiant nine-year-old kid who’s always pushing the glass toward the edge of the table, defying his parents to stop him,” Barr described. “It’s a means of self-assertion and exerting his dominance over others. He’s a very petty individual who will always prioritize his interests over the country’s. But our country cannot be a therapy session for a troubled man like this.”
Barr went on to express his belief that Trump will face prosecution in the federal criminal investigation into his attempts to overturn the 2020 election. However, he cautioned that the case might be challenging to prosecute due to First Amendment protections. Barr also mentioned the likelihood of charges being filed in the criminal investigation in Georgia but expressed skepticism about that case.
