Former Baltimore City State Attorney Marilyn Mosby has been found guilty of mortgage fraud.
On Tuesday, Mosby was convicted of mortgage fraud after admitting to “unintentionally” providing false information on loan applications to purchase two vacation homes in Florida.
The verdict, announced by The Associated Press, acquitted Mosby of a second mortgage fraud charge after a day of deliberation by the jury.
In November, Mosby was already convicted of perjury for falsely claiming financial hardship during the COVID-19 pandemic to withdraw money from the city’s retirement fund.
She has yet to be sentenced in either case and could face up to five years in prison for each count.
Prosecutors filed the mortgage fraud charges against Mosby after allegations that she used money from the retirement fund as a down payment for the Florida properties and repeatedly lied on mortgage applications.
The trial for Mosby’s mortgage fraud case was initially scheduled in Baltimore but was moved to Greenbelt, Maryland due to concerns about potential bias from media coverage.
During the trial, both Mosby and her ex-husband, Baltimore City Council President Nick Mosby, testified. Nick Mosby admitted to lying about their federal tax debt out of embarrassment.
Marilyn claimed that she made the false statements unintentionally and in good faith when signing the applications. However, she failed to disclose the debt, leading to the fraud charges.
Prosecutors alleged that Marilyn lied about receiving a $5,000 gift from her husband, which helped her secure a lower interest rate. The prosecution presented evidence linking the gift to her personal account, resulting in the conviction.
Mosby now faces a maximum prison sentence of 30 years for the mortgage fraud conviction.
