Ex-combat aviator enters GOP race for vacant Maryland House seat.
Former Navy Officer Enters Race to Represent Maryland’s 6th Congressional District
A former Navy officer and combat aviator has recently announced his candidacy as a Republican to represent Maryland’s 6th Congressional District. Tom Royals is determined to succeed Rep. David Trone (D-MD), who has decided to run for the retiring Sen. Ben Cardin’s (D-MD) open Senate seat instead.
A Call to Serve
Royals was inspired to apply to the U.S. Naval Academy after witnessing the September 11 terror attacks. He proudly served as a Naval Flight Officer, earning his wings and deploying overseas on combat missions over Iraq and Afghanistan. In a heartfelt video announcement, Royals shared how his grandfather’s example motivated him to dedicate his life to serving his country.
“Now, as a husband and father, I see America under a different kind of attack,” Royals expressed in a press release. ”Left-wing politicians are targeting the rights of parents, lawlessness on America’s southern border is allowing lethal drugs to flood into Maryland communities, anti-police rhetoric and soft on crime policies are putting communities at risk, and reckless spending and out-of-control debt are threatening our economy.”
A New Generation of Leadership
Maryland state Del. Joe Vogel, a Democrat, also announced his bid for the seat shortly after Trone’s decision. At just 26 years old, Vogel aims to be one of the youngest members of Congress if elected. Emphasizing his age, Vogel believes that a new generation of leaders is needed in Washington to address critical issues such as gun violence, protecting rights, preserving democracy, and combating climate change.
A Competitive Race
Royals will face competition from other Republicans in the 2024 nomination race. Dr. Mariela Roca, a veteran and parent, has also thrown her hat into the ring. Additionally, Neil Parrot, who previously ran against Trone in 2020 and 2022, is considering joining the race to represent House Republicans. Despite the Cook Political Report rating the race as “likely Democrat,” Republicans are optimistic that the absence of millionaire Total Wine & More co-owner Trone will make the seat more competitive.
Trone notably invested millions of dollars of his own money in his previous House races. In his current high-profile Senate bid, Trone has reportedly loaned himself $9.7 million so far.
