Former Harris aide suggests plan in which she can become 47th president after election defeat – Washington Examiner
A former aide to Vice President Kamala Harris has proposed a controversial plan for her to become the 47th president of the United States. After Harris lost the 2024 presidential election, Jamal Simmons, her former communications director, suggested during a CNN appearance that President Joe Biden resign in the near future so that Harris could take over the presidency. This would allow her to complete Biden’s term until January 20, 2025, when President-elect Donald Trump is scheduled to be inaugurated. Simmons praised Biden’s presidency and framed his resignation as an opportunity for him to fulfill a promise of being a transitional figure, thereby easing Harris’s transition after her electoral defeat.

Vice President Kamala Harris lost the 2024 presidential election, but one of her former aides still sees a way in which Harris can become the 47th president. It is an elaborate scheme that would require help from the commander in chief, President Joe Biden.
During an appearance on CNN’s State of the Union on Sunday, Jamal Simmons, Harris’s former communications director, proposed that Biden resign the presidency in the immediate future, which would allow Harris to replace him, be sworn in as president, and serve out the remainder of his term, which ends when President-elect Donald Trump is inaugurated on Jan. 20, 2025.
“Joe Biden has been a phenomenal president. He’s lived up to so many of the promises he’s made,” Simmons told Sunday’s State of the Union panel. “There’s one promise left that he can fulfill: being a transitional figure. He could resign the presidency in the next 30 days, making Kamala Harris the United States president. He would absolve her from having to oversee the Jan. 6 transition of her own defeat.”
“And it would make sure — it would dominate the news, at a point where Democrats have to learn drama and transparency and doing things that the public want to see,” Simmons said. “This is the moment for us to change the entire perspective of how Democrats operate.”
“This has now jumped from an internet meme to a Sunday morning show,” State of the Union host Dana Bash said in response.
Bash also asked about the Supreme Court, referencing a conspiracy-type scenario that has made its rounds on social media in which older, Democratic-appointed justices resign and Biden appoints their replacements with younger justices who could remain Supreme Court justices for much longer. However, Simmons didn’t address that topic. Instead, he returned to his proposed idea, suggesting that planning for Harris to be the 47th president was something in Biden’s control.
“This is in Joe Biden’s control,” Simmons said. “If he did it, again, it would fulfill his last promise. It would give Kamala Harris the chance to be the 47th president of the United States of America. It would disrupt all of Donald Trump’s paraphernalia. [He’d] have to rebrand everything, and it would make it easier for the next woman who runs for president to not have to worry about the historical weight of being the first.”
