Ex-LA Sheriff’s Deputy to Admit Federal Offense
Former Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Pleads Guilty to Violating Civil Rights
In a shocking turn of events, a former Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy has agreed to plead guilty to violating the civil rights of a man at a Compton skate park. Miguel Angel Vega, 33, has admitted to falsely imprisoning a 23-year-old skateboarder in his patrol car and then attempting to cover up his actions.
According to court papers filed on Sept. 5, Vega improperly detained the skateboarder, which resulted in a car chase that ended in a crash, leaving the man injured. To make matters worse, Vega also confessed to filing false reports in an effort to conceal his and his partner’s unlawful conduct.
Vega has agreed to plead guilty to one count of deprivation of rights under color of law, a crime that carries a sentence of up to 10 years in federal prison. The formal plea is expected to take place in the coming weeks in downtown Los Angeles.

Vega’s former partner, Christopher Blair Hernandez, 37, had already pleaded guilty in July to one count of conspiracy. He is set to be sentenced on Jan. 8 and could face up to five years in federal prison.
The incident occurred on April 13, 2020, at an enclosed skate park in Compton. The deputies arrived and approached two young Black males outside the park. Hernandez believed one of the males was on probation, leading to a confrontation.
Vega allegedly got into an argument with a man identified as J.A. and even challenged him to a fight. He then forcibly pulled J.A. through a park fence and placed him in the back of the patrol SUV without handcuffing or informing him of his arrest.
During the drive, Vega continued to provoke J.A. and made threats, suggesting they would abandon him in gang territory. He also planned to fabricate false allegations of drug use to justify their actions.
As the chase ensued, Vega crashed the SUV into a wall and another vehicle, causing J.A. to sustain injuries. After the crash, Vega removed J.A. from the vehicle and instructed him to leave. He then falsely reported over the sheriff’s radio that a suspect with a gun had fled the scene.
It was only when J.A. was detained by another deputy that the truth began to unravel. This shocking case highlights the abuse of power and the lengths some individuals will go to cover up their misconduct.
