Ex-Miss Texas Averie Bishop takes on GOP’s Angie Chen Button for state House.
The Battle for Texas: Averie Bishop Takes on Angie Chen Button
The political landscape in Texas is heating up as the liberal former Miss Texas, Averie Bishop, throws her hat in the ring to challenge GOP state Rep. Angie Chen Button for her seat. At just 26 years old, Bishop has already made a name for herself by fearlessly voicing her criticism of conservatives in a predominantly conservative state.
Breaking away from the traditional pageant mold, Bishop has used her platform to champion liberal causes such as abortion access, gun control, and diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. Now, she is taking her passion for change to the next level by running for public office against a seasoned Republican representative.
A New Voice for Texas
In a statement obtained by the Texas Tribune, Bishop made her campaign’s direction clear:
“I know what it’s like to grow up in a small town and never see leaders who looked like me, let alone who fought for me,” she said. “It’s time for the next generation of Texans to lead — to protect our state’s environment and economy, to safeguard our schools and our right to education, and to truly represent the majority of this great state.”
Bishop’s rise to prominence can be attributed, in part, to her savvy use of social media. As an influencer on TikTok, she has amassed a large following and utilized this platform to advocate for liberal causes. She has even taken her activism a step further by personally lobbying the state legislature on various issues, including her unwavering support for diversity, equity, and inclusion programs.
Meanwhile, Button has held her seat since 2009, proving to be a formidable opponent. In the 2020 election, she secured victory by a narrow margin of roughly 300 votes in a district that favored President Joe Biden by 9 percentage points.
The stage is set for an intense battle between two strong-willed women with contrasting ideologies. Will Bishop’s fresh perspective and determination be enough to unseat the long-standing Republican representative? Only time will tell.
