Steve Garvey, ex-MLB star, joins California Senate race as GOP candidate.
Former MLB Player Steve Garvey Announces Senate Bid in California
On Tuesday, former Major League Baseball player Steve Garvey made an exciting announcement – he is running for California’s Senate seat in 2024 as a Republican. In a captivating video, Garvey showcased his impressive 19-season career with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres, emphasizing that he is running “a commonsense campaign.”
“I never played for Democrats or Republicans or independents. I played for all of you,” expressed the 74-year-old Garvey.
Aiming to Fill Feinstein’s Shoes
Garvey’s goal is to replace the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who served as California’s longest-serving female senator until her recent passing at the age of 90. However, Garvey faces an uphill battle as California has not elected a Republican to the Senate in over three decades.
During his time with the Dodgers, Garvey achieved the remarkable feat of winning the National League MVP in 1974. He spent 14 seasons with the Los Angeles team before joining the Padres in 1983. Garvey retired from baseball in 1988 at the age of 39, leaving behind a lasting legacy as he still holds the National League record for the most consecutive games played (1,207).
“I’m running for the U.S. Senate in California. A state that I believe at one time was the heartbeat of America. And now it’s just a murmur,” Garvey passionately declared. “It’s time to get off the bench. It’s time to put the uniform on. It’s time to get back in the game.”
A Crowded Race
Garvey’s entrance into the Senate race adds to an already packed field of high-profile Democrats, including Reps. Katie Porter, Adam Schiff, and Barbara Lee. Additionally, former tech executive Lexi Reese launched her candidacy in June.
Adam Schiff, in response to Garvey’s bid, took a jab at the former baseball player, stating, “I have a new Republican opponent — Steve Garvey. Before he was a multi-millionaire Republican celebrity, he was a first baseman. Based on his announcement, it sounds like he’s ready to take up the fight for everyone born on third base — thinking they hit a triple. Go figure.”
On the Republican side, Garvey is joined by Eric Early, a Republican attorney and businessman who previously ran for attorney general in 2022 and 2018. Several other candidates from both parties, with limited statewide recognition, have also filed for candidacy.
It’s worth noting that Gov. Gavin Newsom recently appointed Sen. Laphonza Butler, a former adviser to Vice President Kamala Harris and president of EMILY’s List, to fill Feinstein’s seat. However, Butler has not yet confirmed whether she will run in the upcoming election.

Besides his athletic accomplishments, what other factors did Garvey highlight in his campaign announcement video?
Th the Dodgers and Padres, Garvey was known for his exceptional performance on the field, as well as his leadership skills and strong work ethic. He was an All-Star 10 times, won four Gold Glove Awards, and was named the National League Championship Series MVP in 1978. Garvey was also a member of the Dodgers’ World Series-winning team in 1981.
However, Garvey’s campaign is not solely focused on his athletic achievements. He is eager to bring his passion for service and his love for California to the political arena. In his announcement video, he highlighted his commitment to preserving California’s natural beauty, supporting education, and advocating for small businesses.
Garvey’s decision to run as a Republican in a predominantly Democratic state may raise some eyebrows. However, he believes that his pragmatic approach and ability to find common ground will resonate with voters regardless of their political affiliation.
“I have always believed in the power of unity and working together to achieve common goals,” Garvey stated. “I want to bring that same spirit to the Senate, where I can be a voice for Californians and help bring about positive change.”
While Garvey’s announcement was met with enthusiasm by some, others remain skeptical of his chances. California’s political landscape has become increasingly progressive in recent years, and the state’s Republican party has struggled to gain a foothold. It will undoubtedly be an uphill battle for Garvey to secure the Senate seat in 2024.
However, Garvey’s impressive track record as a professional athlete, combined with his charisma and dedication to public service, may help him appeal to a broad range of voters. His ability to transcend party lines and connect with people from different backgrounds and beliefs could be a valuable asset in a highly polarized political climate.
As Garvey embarks on his campaign journey, he will face numerous challenges, including a competitive primary race and the general perception that California is a Democratic stronghold. However, with his determination and proven leadership skills, Garvey is not one to back down from a challenge.
Only time will tell if Steve Garvey can successfully transition from the baseball diamond to the political arena. But there is no doubt that his announcement has injected a new level of excitement into the upcoming Senate race in California. As voters evaluate their options and consider the future of their state, they will be watching closely to see if Garvey can indeed hit a home run and secure a victory in 2024.
