Former Republican Governor Announces 2024 Presidential Campaign

Former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson has announced his campaign for the presidency in 2024. Hutchinson is the fourth significant Republican candidate to announce his bid for the presidency.

During an interview with ABC News on Sunday, Hutchinson stated that he firmly believes that the American people require leaders “that appeal to the best of America, and not simply appeal to our worst instincts”. He went on to confirm his plans to run, saying that he believes he can become a leader who represents the people of America.

Hutchinson, a former federal prosecutor, has repeatedly stated that Donald Trump should withdraw from the 2024 race. In response to a question about whether the former president should step down, Hutchinson confirmed that Trump should do so. However, he also noted that there is no constitutional requirement for the former president to withdraw.

Other significant Republican candidates include former President Donald Trump, former Governor of South Carolina Nikki Haley, and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy. The likelihood is that other candidates, such as former Vice President Mike Pence, former CIA Director and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, and Governor of Florida Ron DeSantis, will also launch presidential bids.

Notably, Hutchinson has been highly critical of former President Donald Trump in the past, regularly appearing on CNN and ABC News to take aim at him. His criticisms continue, with Hutchinson stating earlier this month that Trump should quit the 2024 race if indicted by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. Hutchinson is one of only a handful of Republicans to express support for Bragg’s investigation and charges against Trump.

After Trump’s indictment was confirmed last week, Hutchinson took to Twitter to confirm that he believed the decision of the next president should be made at the ballot box and not in the court system. He once again stated that Donald Trump should not be the next president, but that it should be left to the voters to decide.

A recent poll by Quinnipiac suggests that Hutchinson is a long-shot candidate. The former governor received less than 1 percent of the voters’ support when asked who they would select as their preferred candidate for the presidency.
