Four U.S. Troops Injured In Raid that Killed ISIS Leader in Syria

According to U.S. Central Command on Thursday night, four U.S. soldiers and a military dog were hurt in a joint helicopter strike in Syria.

The command stated that the troops were hurt while conducting the raid with the Syrian Democratic Forces. It said that they were all in stable condition, and that they are being treated at a U.S. hospital in Iraq.

Hamza al-Homsi died in a raid on northeastern Syria. The military claimed that he was a senior leader within the Islamic State terrorist group. Baghdad was visited by the General in Charge of Central Command, who warned that ISIS is still fighting despite the withdrawal from Iraq of combat troops.

“The injuries to the U.S. troops and working dog resulted from Hamza al-Homsi detonating an explosion on the target in the vicinity of Deir ez-Zor, Syria,” Col. Joe Buccino, the Central Command spokesperson, stated in a statement to Military.com. “Hamza al-Homsi oversaw the group’s deadly terrorist network in eastern Syria before he was killed in the raid.”

Around 900 U.S. troops are still operating in Syria. They work alongside local allied forces, fighting what remains of this group nearly a decade since it invaded Syria and Iraq and tried to establish a global terrorist caliphate.

ISIS was well-known for its ability to execute civilians via video for propaganda, including the taping of Steven Sotloff and James Foley being beheaded. It inspired terrorist attacks all over the globe and committed genocide against Iraq’s Yazidi minority religion group.

“Alongside our partners in the Syrian Democratic Forces, we continue to put pressure on ISIS in Syria,” Gen. Erik Kurilla is the head of Central Command. He made these remarks during a visit to Baghdad, where he met with officials from Iraq. “Territorially, ISIS is defeated and incapable of holding large swaths of land. However, ISIS remains a threat, and its vile ideology remains uncontained and unconstrained.”

The U.S. ended combat operations against Iraq in December 2021. However, approximately 2,500 troops were still available for support.
