Farm Bureau reports lower prices for Fourth of July cookouts, but concerns persist.
Your Fourth of July Cookout: More Affordable and Delicious!
Get ready for an unforgettable Fourth of July cookout that won’t break the bank! According to the American Farm Bureau Federation, this year’s celebration will be more budget-friendly compared to last year.
Last year, the bureau reported record-high costs for serving ten people, but this year, families can rejoice as prices have decreased by approximately 3%. With an average grocery bill of just $67.73, you can feed a group of ten with ease.

While the prices have dropped from last year, it’s important to note that they are still the second-highest ever recorded. In fact, this year’s cookout expenses are a staggering 14% higher than they were two years ago, raising concerns among some at the bureau.
“Although the cost of a cookout has slightly decreased, it doesn’t offset the significant increases we’ve witnessed in recent years,” explained Roger Cryan, the chief economist at the American Farm Bureau Federation, as reported by CNN. “Families are still grappling with high inflation and other factors that contribute to elevated prices.”
According to CNN, there are twelve essential items for an Independence Day cookout. While hamburger buns, beef, and potato salad have become pricier this year, there is good news too. Chicken breast, lemonade, and chocolate chip cookies have all seen a drop in price. Additionally, pork chops, cheese, pork and beans, potato chips, ice cream, and strawberries complete the list of must-have groceries.

But that’s not all! The Fourth of July celebrations get even better with reduced airfare. Round-trip tickets this year are a whopping 27% cheaper compared to the same time in 2022. And let’s not forget about gas prices, which are significantly lower than they were a year ago.
