Fox News bans Trump surrogates from debate ‘spin room’ due to Trump’s absence.
Fox News Restricts Access to Debate Spin Room for Trump Surrogates
Fox News has made a surprising move ahead of the Republican Party primary debate in Milwaukee. After former President Donald Trump announced that he would not be attending, the network has decided to restrict access to the debate “spin room” for his surrogates.
“The network informed the Trump campaign on Monday that access to the debate ‘spin room’ was now going to be limited to ’participating candidate/campaigns,'” according to a Fox News memo obtained by Axios.
This means that not only will Trump’s surrogates be excluded, but other campaigns that did not qualify will also not be allowed to send their representatives onto the network.
Trump Declares the Primary Over
The 77-year-old former president made a bold statement over the weekend, declaring that the results of a CBS News GOP primary poll proved that the primary was over and that he did not need to debate. However, a notable poll in Iowa released this week showed that the race could be much closer in the key primary state.
“I WILL THEREFORE NOT BE DOING THE DEBATES!” Trump stated on social media on Sunday evening.
Instead of participating in the debate, Trump opted to tape a pre-recorded interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, which will be streamed on social media around the time of the debate.
The CBS News poll that Trump cited to justify his decision included a question for “likely Republican primary voters” about his appearance at the debate. The results showed that 73% believed he should show up, while only 27% disagreed.
Is Trump Helping Biden?
Some have speculated that Trump’s decision to skip the debates may actually be helping President Joe Biden. “Fox & Friends” co-host Steve Doocy suggested that by not debating, Trump is giving Biden an excuse to avoid debating him if he becomes the Republican Party nominee.
“Unfortunately, by skipping the debates, Donald Trump may actually be helping Joe Biden because he’s giving Joe Biden an excuse for not debating Donald Trump,” Doocy explained.
Doocy further elaborated that if Trump claims he doesn’t need to debate because everyone knows him, Biden could respond by saying the same as the current president.
