French news service sues Elon Musk’s X for not paying news outlets.
A French News Outlet Sues Elon Musk’s X for Compensation
A major French news outlet is taking legal action against Elon Musk’s X, formerly known as Twitter, for failing to discuss compensation for sharing news on the platform.
Agence France-Presse (AFP), a France-based newswire service, announced on Wednesday that it has filed a lawsuit against Musk in a Paris court over copyright law. In 2019, France passed a law establishing “neighboring rights,” which requires online platforms to negotiate compensation with news outlets.
“Agence France-Presse has expressed its concerns over the clear refusal from Twitter (recently rebranded as ‘X’) to enter into discussions regarding the implementation of neighboring rights for the press,” the outlet said in a statement.
Musk responded to AFP’s lawsuit in a post on X, stating, “This is bizarre. They want us to pay *them* for traffic to their site where they make advertising revenue and we don’t!?”
France’s antitrust watchdog fined Google 500 million euros in 2021 for failing to negotiate compensation with local news outlets.
The lawsuit coincides with Meta and Google removing news links from the Canadian internet in protest of C-18, a bill that would require online platforms to provide compensation to news outlets. Meta has already started removing Canadian news links from its platform this week.
