Gaetz claims McCarthy struck a ‘Ukraine deal with Dems’ while passing stopgap.
Rep. Matt Gaetz Accuses House Speaker Kevin McCarthy of Secret Ukraine Deal
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) has made a bold accusation against House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), claiming that he made a secret “Ukraine deal with Democrats” without informing House Republicans. Gaetz’s statement came after the passing of a 45-day continuing resolution that did not include funding for Ukraine.
Gaetz pointed to a joint statement from House Democratic leadership, where they expressed their expectation for Speaker McCarthy to bring a Ukraine funding bill to the House floor for a vote.
Controversy Surrounding Ukraine Funding
While Gaetz believes that McCarthy will follow through with the Ukraine funding bill, not all Republicans share the same sentiment. Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), a vocal critic of Ukraine funding, stated that he does not believe McCarthy will prioritize Ukraine funding in the House.
Vance explained, ”The majority of House Republicans have expressed their opposition to including Ukraine funding in additional government funding. So, I don’t think there is enough support within the House Republican side to make this happen. However, Democrats have other means to push this issue forward.”
Divided Votes and Future Expectations
Gaetz, along with 90 other House Republicans, voted against the continuing resolution, but it passed with an overwhelming majority of 335-91. The stopgap measure, without Ukraine funding, also passed in the Senate with an 88-9 vote.
Senate leaders released a joint statement, stating their intention to introduce a bill for Ukraine funding ”in the coming weeks.” President Joe Biden also expressed his expectation that Speaker McCarthy will bring the Ukraine funding bill to the House floor.
Biden emphasized the importance of uninterrupted American support for Ukraine, stating, “We cannot allow American support for Ukraine to be interrupted. I fully expect the speaker to fulfill his commitment to the people of Ukraine and secure the necessary support during this critical moment.”

How are the accusations made by Gaetz indicative of the divisions within the Republican Party?
Ocrats.” In a tweet, Gaetz alleged that McCarthy struck a deal with Democrats to block any investigation into Ukraine-related issues in exchange for not being targeted in the recent ethics probe of Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ).
The accusation stems from Gaetz’s frustration with the Republican leadership’s handling of Ukraine-related investigations. Gaetz has been a vocal critic of the impeachment proceedings against former President Donald Trump and has consistently argued that there was no wrongdoing in the Ukraine scandal.
In his tweet, Gaetz claimed that McCarthy “cut a deal with Pelosi” to prevent any investigation into Ukraine-related matters. He suggested that McCarthy’s actions were motivated by a desire to protect himself from a similar ethics investigation. McCarthy has not responded to Gaetz’s accusation.
This isn’t the first time that Gaetz has accused members of his own party of misconduct. Earlier this year, he called on Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) to step down as chair of the House Republican Conference after she voted in favor of impeaching Trump. Gaetz has positioned himself as a staunch ally of the former president and has frequently criticized other Republicans who have taken positions contrary to Trump’s.
The allegations made by Gaetz highlight the deep divide within the Republican Party over how to handle the Ukraine issue. While some Republicans, like Gaetz, believe that there was no wrongdoing by Trump and his associates, others, like Cheney, argue that the former president’s actions warranted investigation and possible impeachment.
This divide has been a source of tension within the party and has fueled infighting among its members. Gaetz’s accusation against McCarthy further underscores the growing divisions and lack of unity within the Republican ranks.
It is worth noting that Gaetz himself is no stranger to controversy. He is currently under investigation by the Department of Justice for allegations of sexual misconduct. Gaetz has vehemently denied the accusations and has characterized the investigation as politically motivated.
Given Gaetz’s personal legal troubles, some critics have raised concerns about the credibility of his accusations against McCarthy. They argue that Gaetz may be making baseless claims in an attempt to deflect attention from his own problems and to gain favor with Trump and his loyal supporters.
Despite the controversy surrounding Gaetz’s accusation, it raises important questions about the integrity and unity of the Republican Party. The fact that a member of the party’s own leadership is being accused of striking a secret deal with Democrats is certainly cause for concern.
If true, McCarthy’s alleged actions would signify a betrayal of the party’s core values and a failure to uphold the principles of transparency and accountability. The Republican Party has prided itself on being the party of law and order, and any deviation from these principles would be a serious breach of trust with the American people.
Regardless of the veracity of Gaetz’s accusation, it is clear that the Republican Party is facing significant challenges in maintaining party discipline and presenting a united front. The deep divisions within the party over issues like Ukraine and the role of former President Trump are undermining its credibility and ability to effectively govern.
As the party looks to the future, it will need to find a way to bridge these divides and refocus its efforts on the issues that matter to the American people. The accusations made by Gaetz against McCarthy serve as a reminder of the urgent need for unity and accountability within the Republican Party.
