Gaetz to propose bill cutting funds for Trump investigation by Jack Smith.
Rep. Matt Gaetz Plans to Introduce Bill to Defund Special Counsel Investigation
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) is taking action to defund special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into former President Donald Trump. In a recent episode of his podcast Firebrand, Gaetz emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that the House of Representatives should not wait for the appropriations process or the Holman rule.
Protecting Democracy and Preserving the Republic
Gaetz strongly believes that the investigation poses a threat to democracy and accuses those involved of engaging in election interference. He questions the purpose of preserving the republic if Congress lacks the capability to stop such interference. Gaetz emphasizes the need to operationalize our commitment to protecting democracy.
Currently, Trump is the subject of two Department of Justice investigations. One focuses on the Capitol riot that occurred on January 6, while the other pertains to his alleged mishandling of classified documents found at his Mar-a-Lago residence.
Smith’s Role in the Investigation
Since his appointment by Attorney General Merrick Garland in November 2022, Jack Smith has been leading the inquiry into Trump’s involvement in the Capitol riot and any potential efforts to overturn the 2020 election results.
Trump himself revealed on Truth Social that he received a letter from Smith, notifying him that he is a target of a grand jury investigation based in Washington, D.C.
Gaetz’s Efforts to Defund the Investigation
Gaetz’s bill aims to defund the investigation, citing concerns of election interference and a lack of transparency from the Department of Justice towards Congress. He has reached out to the attorney general, seeking information about the individuals on Smith’s team.
Last month, Gaetz sent a letter to Garland, requesting that the DOJ keep and produce all records from Smith’s office. He demanded access to a staff and phone list of employees assigned to Smith’s office, with a deadline of July 7 for the documents to be provided to Congress. Gaetz claims that the DOJ has been unresponsive to his requests.
Gaetz emphasizes the power of the purse, stating that it should be wielded consistently to achieve victory for the American people and put an end to the investigation.
