The price of gas has gradually decreased since the summer. Tuesday’s price is the lowest national average price for gas since May 2021, when the average cost for regular gas was $2.985 per gallon, according to the Energy Information Administration. Since then, high gas prices have been a financial burden to drivers at over $3 per gallon and, for a brief period, over $4 per gallon.

High gas prices have been a staple for most of Joe Biden’s term. After hitting record highs in 2022, the highest in the nation’s history, gas prices began to decrease later in the year. After another spike in 2023, gas prices began declining again in May 2024 and have continued to fall each month.

However, even with the substantial decrease in gas prices over the last half of the year, prices remain higher now than when President-elect Donald Trump was in office between January 2017 and January 2021. With Trump set to take office on Jan. 20, 2025, it remains to be seen what impact his presidency will have on gas prices.

Meanwhile, gas prices continue to fluctuate across the nation. Hawaii has the most expensive gas prices in the country, at $4.559 per gallon. Delaware

The average price for a gallon of gas in Delaware decreased on Friday, falling to a new low of $2.885. This was a fairly significant drop from a week ago, when a gallon of regular gas was $2.977. Gas prices have fluctuated a bit over the last month in the First State. Yet despite this inconsistent pricing, Friday’s price for regular gas in Delaware is less expensive than a month ago, when regular gas cost $2.965 per gallon.

Maryland

Gas prices also fell in Maryland on Friday, dropping to $3.001 per gallon. This was a decrease from a week ago, when a gallon of regular gas in Maryland was $3.067. Similar to Delaware, Maryland also had a significant price fluctuation in November. Earlier in November, gas prices had soared in Maryland with a cost of $3.157. Recently, however, gas prices have trended downward in the state. Friday’s price was less expensive than a month ago, when regular gas was $3.057 per gallon.

Virginia

Gas prices also fell in Virginia on Friday, coming in at $2.915, more than three cents cheaper than a week ago. A month ago, a gallon of regular gas in Virginia was $3.003. Much like the other states in the Delmarva region, gas prices in Virginia experienced a significant fluctuation in November before ultimately reverting back to a lower price near the $3 per gallon mark.

Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C., continues to be the outlier in the region where gas prices are north of $3.20 per gallon – much more expensive than prices in Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia. On Friday, the average price for a gallon of regular gas dipped in the city, to a price of $3.224. This was the smallest of decreases from Thursday, when regular gas was ever-so-slightly more expensive at $3.226. A week ago, gas less than a penny more than it was on Friday, with a price of $3.232 per gallon. Prices in the nation’s capital are also less expensive today than a month ago, when a gallon of regular gas was $3.268.
