Gas prices: Decrease at the pumps as gas costs match lowest price in 2024

The national average price for a gallon of regular gas decreased to $3.071 on Monday, according to AAA. This is the lowest national average price in 2024 and the least expensive average price for a gallon of regular gas since June 2021, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

High gas prices, over $3 per gallon, have plagued the Biden administration since June 2021. After hitting record highs in 2022, gas prices began to decrease later in the year. Nevertheless, President Joe Biden was burdened with high gas prices during most of his term, and gas prices hovered in ranges that were the highest in the nation’s history.

Earlier this year, gas prices began to decrease sharply. Yet despite this string of decreases at the pumps, gas prices remain higher today than during the last months and days of President-elect Donald Trump’s first term. Nevertheless, gas prices continue to fluctuate across the nation, and it remains to be seen what gas prices will be under a second Trump administration.

Currently, Hawaii has the most expensive gas prices in the country, costing $4.572 per gallon. Meanwhile, Oklahoma has the least expensive gas in the nation, costing $2.568 per gallon.
