It is also less expensive today than a week ago when it cost $3.374 for a gallon of regular gas and a month ago when it was $3.499 per gallon. Moreover, gas prices are significantly cheaper than a year ago when the average price for a gallon of regular gas was $3.827.

Gas prices remain a vital topic heading into the 2024 presidential election. With President Joe Biden deciding not to seek reelection, Vice President Kamala Harris, now the Democratic presidential nominee, will have to indicate how she will address the country’s high gas prices and energy costs and how both affect the economy and people’s finances.

While prices have fluctuated in 2024, they have decreased in recent weeks and months. Nevertheless, gas prices remain significantly higher than when former President Donald Trump was in office.

Gas prices in the nation’s capital are higher than the national average. However, prices have decreased recently in Washington, D.C., a trend that continued on Friday. The average cost for a gallon of regular gas is $3.588 in the capital city. This was a drop from a week ago when a gallon of regular gas averaged $3.631. It’s also cheaper than a month ago when it cost $3.696 for a gallon of regular in the nation’s capital. Moreover, gas prices are significantly cheaper today than a year ago in D.C., when the average cost for a gallon of regular gas was $3.972.

Maryland

In Maryland, gas prices fell to $3.269 on Friday. This was a slight decrease from a week ago when the average price for a gallon of regular gas was $3.303. Falling gas prices in Maryland have been a recent trend, starting around a month ago, when the average cost for a gallon of regular gas was $3.472. Today’s price is also lower than a year ago when a gallon of regular gas was $3.693.

Delaware

On Friday, gas prices in Delaware continued to be the lowest in the region, at $3.168 per gallon. This decreased from last week when the average cost for a gallon of regular gas was $3.214. Prices are significantly cheaper than a month ago when residents of the First State paid $3.377 per gallon for regular gas. Additionally, a year ago, gas was much more expensive, when people in Delaware paid $3.622 for a gallon.

Virginia

The average price for regular gas in Virginia on Friday is $3.219 per gallon, a slight drop from Thursday’s price of $3.227. Prices are also more affordable than a week ago, when regular gas cost $3.249 per gallon. It’s also less expensive than a month ago, when regular gas in Virginia cost $3.38, and a year ago when the price was $3.615 per gallon for regular gas.

Mississippi

Mississippi is the state with the least expensive gas prices in the country on Friday, with a cost of $2.878 per gallon. This was a decrease from last week when a gallon of regular was $2.921. A month ago, gas prices were slightly higher but still the cheapest in the nation, coming in at $2.971. A year ago in Mississippi, gas prices were significantly higher, with a price of $3.305 per gallon.

Hawaii

Hawaii remains the state with the most expensive gas in the nation, with an average price for regular gas at $4.655 per gallon on Friday. Prices are about the same today as a week ago, when gas was ever-so-slightly more expensive, at $4.657 per gallon. A month ago, regular gas was less than two cents higher, at $4.671 per gallon.
