Gas prices: Decrease at the pumps to start the week sets new low for gas costs in 2024

The national average price for a gallon of regular gas dropped to a new yearly low on Monday, with a cost of $3.056, according to AAA. This was a decrease from a week ago when a gallon of regular gas was $3.071.

Gas prices have been gradually decreasing since the summer. Monday’s price is the lowest national average price for gas since May 2021, when the average cost for regular gas was $2.985 per gallon, according to the Energy Information Administration. Since then, high gas prices have been a financial burden to drivers at over $3 per gallon (and, for a brief period, over $4 per gallon).

For most of the time he has been in office, high gas prices have been an issue for President Joe Biden. After hitting record highs in 2022, the highest in the nation’s history, gas prices began to decrease later in the year. After another spike in 2023, gas prices began declining again in May 2024 and have continued to fall each month.

Yet, despite months of decreases at the pumps, gas prices remain higher today than when President-elect Donald Trump was in office between January 2017 and January 2021. With Trump set to take office on Jan. 20, 2025, it remains to be seen what will happen with gas prices during Trump’s second term.

Meanwhile, gas prices continue to fluctuate across the nation. Currently, Hawaii has the most expensive gas prices in the country at $4.574 per gallon. Meanwhile, Oklahoma has the least expensive gas in the nation, at $2.514 per gallon. Click here to see the cost of gas in different states.
