This price is also lower compared to a week ago when it averaged $3.506 and even more so from a month ago at $3.515.

With President Joe Biden not seeking reelection, the onus will fall on Vice President Kamala Harris, the likely Democratic nominee, to outline her approach to managing gas prices and energy costs.
While gas prices have fluctuated throughout 2024, they have shown a recent downward trend. However, current prices still remain higher than they were during the administration of former President Donald Trump.
Gas prices vary considerably by state. For example, in Washington, D.C., the average price for a gallon of regular gas was $3.688 on Sunday, down from $3.693 the previous day. In Virginia, the price was $3.32, and in Maryland, it averaged $3.399. Delaware reported an average price of $3.293, showing a consistent decline across these regions compared to previous days and weeks.

In Virginia, the average price for a gallon of regular-grade gas was $3.32 to end the weekend. This decreased from Saturday’s average price of $3.328 per gallon. Gas prices are also less expensive in the state than a week ago when regular-grade gas was $3.386 per gallon. Prices are also less expensive now compared to a month ago when the price for a gallon of regular was $3.383.
Maryland
On Sunday in Maryland, the average price for a gallon of regular gas was $3.399. This was a decrease from Saturday when the price of regular gas averaged $3.41 per gallon. Hawaii is the state with the most expensive gas in the nation, coming in with an average of $4.667 per gallon for regular gas on Sunday. The Aloha State began August with higher gas prices than California, which Hawaii recently overtook for the dubious distinction of the state with the most expensive gas prices for a gallon of regular gas. In California, a gallon of regular gas averaged $4.646 on the first day of August.
State with the least expensive average price for regular gas
Mississippi continues to be the state with the least expensive gas prices. The average price for a gallon of regular gas in Mississippi on Sunday was $2.953. It is the only state in the nation with an average price for regular gas under $3.
