Gas prices: Slightly more expensive than a week ago – Washington Examiner
Gas prices have experienced a slight increase recently, with the national average rising to $3.024 per gallon as of Monday, up from $3.018 the previous week. This change follows a brief dip to $3.011 just five days earlier. Despite the recent uptick, current gas costs are considerably lower than those from last winter and spring. The prices have been relatively stable as May,marking some of the lowest rates seen since May 2021. The fluctuations in gas prices vary by state, with some areas experiencing costs as low as $2.50 per gallon, while others exceed $4.50 per gallon.
Gas prices: Slightly more expensive than a week ago
Gas prices rose slightly on Monday, resulting in the national average cost for a gallon of regular gasoline being higher than a week ago.
Coming at a cost of $3.024 per gallon, according to AAA. Monday’s price was ever-so-slightly more expensive than last week, when the average price for a gallon of regular gas was $3.018. Five days ago, gas costs had dropped to $3.011 per gallon before gradually rising.
The price of a gallon of regular gas has steadily decreased since May and is significantly less expensive than last winter and spring. According to the Energy Information Administration, the current costs for gas have been at the least expensive rates since May 2021, when the average price for a gallon of regular gas was $2.985. In June 2021, the price of gas began to skyrocket. Costs soared, eventually reaching record-high averages of over $4 per gallon.
After hitting the highest national average price in the country’s history in 2022, costs began to decrease. Gas prices rose again in 2023 and peaked in April 2024 before gradually falling in May 2024.
Meanwhile, gas prices continue to fluctuate throughout the country, with average prices in some states near $2.50 per gallon, whereas in others, the cost of gas is over $4.50 per gallon. Oklahoma has the cheapest gas prices in the country, at $2.504 per gallon. Hawaii has the highest average price for a gallon of gas on Monday, at $4.538.
Gas prices were a controversial political topic for most of the time President Joe Biden has been in office. After reaching record national prices, Biden assured the nation that gas prices would fall. Years later, he seems to have finally delivered on that promise. Nevertheless, despite this year’s substantial decrease in gas prices, gas costs remain higher now than when President-elect Donald Trump was in office between January 2017 and January 2021.

Delaware
The average price for a gallon of regular gas in Delaware on Monday is $2.802, much less expensive than the national average. Gas prices in the state have been steadily decreasing in December after a month of inconsistent costs in November. Monday’s price was lower than a week ago in the First State when a gallon of regular gas was $2.866. A month ago, regular gas was much more expensive at $3.109 per gallon.
Maryland
The average price for a gallon of regular gas in Maryland on Monday is $2.941. This is less expensive than a week ago when a gallon of regular gas in the state was $2.973. Prices in the state have trended downward over the last month after November’s fluctuating gas prices. Monday’s price for gas was much cheaper than a month ago, when regular gas was $3.196 per gallon.
Virginia
Gas prices were trending downward in Virginia on Monday after slight increases in costs last week. Monday’s average price for a gallon of regular gas in the state is $2.899. This was a slight drop from Sunday’s price of $2.905 but also a bit higher than a week ago, when the cost was $2.893. Despite the fluctuation over the last seven days, the average price of regular gas in Virginia is less expensive than month ago, when a gallon of regular gas in the state was $3.012.
Washington, D.C.
Gas prices in Washington, D.C., continue to be the most expensive in the Delmarva region on Monday at $3.234 for a gallon of regular gas. This was a slight rise from Sunday, when regular gas cost $3.23 per gallon. It was also the slightest of increases from a week ago, when regular gas was essentially the same with a cost of $3.233 per gallon. A month ago, the price for a gallon of regular gas in the nation’s capital was $3.26. Over the last month, regular gas prices in Washington have fluctuated between $3.20 per gallon and $3.31 per gallon.
