Gender-affirming care ban for minors stalled by Missouri Democrats in state Senate

The Senate ended on Wednesday after hours of deliberation Senate Bill 49This would prohibit access to hormone therapy, surgery, or puberty-blockers for anyone under 18.

“Ten hours of debate… over two separate days,” The bill’s author is state Senator Mike Moon (R). Tweet. “I laid the bill over, with the expectation of going back to the bill after the brief recess. Then, to adjourn one day early is unbelievable.”
Democratic lawmakers claimed the bill was discriminatory against LGBT teenagers and was therefore harmful. Greg Razer, the state’s openly gay senator (D), led the filibuster.
“They don’t understand these kids,” Razer Telled The Springfield News Leader “They don’t understand who the transgender community is, the basic science of it, and they want to dictate to doctors and to the parents and the kids what medicine can be provided and what medical care can be provided.”
Missouri would be the latest to ban gender-affirming minor healthcare if the bill is passed. Florida, Mississippi and Tennessee are just a few of the states that have banned gender-affirming healthcare for minors. seven states Transgender youth are already exempted from medication and surgical care.
