Proposed Democrat Bill seeks to remove ‘husband’ and ‘wife’ from federal law, eliminating gendered terms.
A California Lawmaker Aims to Change Traditional Marriage Terminology
A California lawmaker is taking aim at the language associated with traditional marriage. Democratic Rep. Julia Brownley of California has introduced the “Amend the Code for Marriage Equality Act,” which specifically targets two words historically linked to matrimony.
Brownley’s 57-page act seeks to remove gendered terms like “husband” and “wife” from federal laws and replace them with the term “spouse.”
The congresswoman claims that this legislation is a response to the Supreme Court and states ”rolling back the rights of the LGBTQ community.”
“Although the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Obergefell v. Hodges that same-sex couples have the right to marry, there are many instances where the U.S. Code does not respect that constitutional right,” Brownley stated in a news release.
She emphasized the importance of Congress showcasing its commitment to equality, especially in the face of an “extreme Supreme Court and state legislatures rolling back the rights of the LGBTQ community.”
The bill outlines the specific instances where “wife” or “husband” should be replaced with ”spouse” in federal law, as well as replacing “husband and wife” with “married couple.”
This move by Brownley aligns with the efforts of fellow Democrats who have been targeting gendered language in the name of LGBT equality.
Notably, the Biden administration faced criticism for replacing the term “mother” with “birthing person” in its 2022 fiscal budget report.
Democrats have also sought to replace “gendered” language in their $3.5 trillion spending bill, using terms like “pregnant, lactating, and postpartum individuals” instead of ”pregnant woman.”
While this issue has become a hot-button topic within the Democratic Party, it has also gained cultural significance, with the Bud Light controversy involving transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney serving as a recent example of its impact.
