Watchdog accuses Gen Z Democrat Maxwell Frost of illegal social media use.

A Freshman Congressman Accused of Violating⁢ Federal Law

A freshman Democratic congressman is facing accusations of violating⁣ federal law through his social media activity, according to a watchdog group.

The Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust (FACT) has lodged a complaint against Generation Z Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-FL) with the Office of Congressional Ethics. The nonpartisan body investigates misconduct among⁤ lawmakers and is now looking into Frost’s alleged unlawful use of “official resources for political purposes.” This includes reposting content from his campaign’s X account.

“On his campaign account, Frost has published‍ numerous tweets using official government resources and ‌re-posting official government content, including official photographs, work product, and‍ official social media posts,” said FACT Executive Director Kendra⁤ Arnold in the complaint.

“The legal violations in this case are clear and there⁢ are no ‍facts that can excuse them,” Arnold added. “In fact, Rep.‍ Frost’s campaign‍ social media accounts demonstrate that he consistently uses official resources for political purposes and that⁣ he has used numerous different types of taxpayer-funded resources for his campaign.”

One example cited in the complaint is a post from Frost’s official account on Aug. 9, which was reposted on his ‌campaign account. The post highlighted Frost’s introduction of the “End Junk Fees for Renters Act,” aimed at preventing landlords from taking advantage of tenants⁢ with excessive fees.

The⁣ watchdog ⁤also pointed out that Frost’s campaign account links to his official account, which ‌goes against federal law and House ethics rules that require a strict separation between campaign and official websites and social media accounts. The Office of Congressional Ethics will determine whether ⁤to‌ investigate the alleged misconduct after receiving complaints from outside groups.

Frost, 26, took office in ‍January and represents Florida’s 10th Congressional District. He succeeded Rep. Val Demings (D-FL) and emerged victorious in a crowded primary, defeating Republican Calvin Wimbish by over 39,000 votes.

Frost’s office has not responded to requests for comment.

“Because this is not an isolated incident and the violations are numerous and obvious, the Office of Congressional⁢ Ethics must act ‍swiftly to deter continued violations,” said Arnold. “The ⁣laws at issue in this case are important⁣ because not only do they protect taxpayer-funded resources from abuse, they ‍also protect the integrity of‌ official proceedings.”
