George Santos prefers detention over revealing his connections.
Republican Representative Refuses to Reveal Cosigners in Criminal Fraud Case
“If this Court is so inclined to unseal the sureties, we truly fear for their health, safety and well being,”
– Joseph Murray, Attorney for Rep. George Santos (R-NY)
Rep. George Santos (R-NY) is facing a criminal fraud case, and his lawyers have requested that the identities of his cosigners for his $500,000 bond be kept sealed. In fact, Santos has stated that he would rather be detained than reveal their names.
Media organizations have requested that the names be unsealed, but Santos’ lawyers argue that the “media frenzy” could put the lives of his backers in danger. Murray, Santos’ attorney, has stressed that if their identities must be released, they should be notified ahead of time so that they can withdraw their signature.
Protecting the Cosigners
“In fact, if the suretors are required to be identified, we respectfully request that the Court allow the suretors notice before the court releases their information so that they can withdraw as cosignors on the bond and Rep. Santos and I will appear before Your Honor forthwith,” Murray wrote.
Santos has made it clear that he would rather surrender to pretrial detainment than subject his cosigners to any potential danger. Despite his indictment, Santos has not been expelled from Congress. The House voted 221-204 last month to transfer the resolution to the Ethics Committee, preventing his immediate expulsion.
