Republican Party suspends Georgia Senator demanding Fani Willis investigation.
Georgia state senator Colton Moore, a Republican who passionately advocated for a special session to investigate and potentially defund Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, has now faced consequences within his own party. Despite warnings from his fellow Republicans that he was breaking the rules, Moore failed to gather support for his proposed actions and has been suspended from his caucus.
On September 28, the Georgia Senate Republicans made a bold statement on social media, announcing Moore’s “indefinite” suspension from the Republican caucus.
“Despite the overwhelming consensus among 32 out of 33 Republican State Senators, the Governor, Lt. Governor, Speaker of the House, and the Chairman of the Georgia Republican Party that a Special Session to address the Fulton County District Attorney is not feasible, Senator Moore is entitled to his own opinion,” they declared.
“However, in his fervent advocacy for his ill-conceived proposal, Senator Moore has knowingly misled people across Georgia and the nation, creating unnecessary tension and hostility. This has put his Caucus colleagues and their families at risk of personal harm,” the statement reads.
It’s important to note that Moore has not been suspended from his elected office, but only from caucusing with the Republican majority.
The caucus clarified that while they strongly disagree with Moore’s proposal to investigate Willis, his suspension is not solely based on his position. Moore, however, disputes this claim.
“Senator Moore was informed that he has violated multiple Caucus Rules on multiple occasions and was given every opportunity to simply adhere to the Rules going forward, rather than persisting with his misguided policy position,” they stated, without specifying which rules were broken.
“Unfortunately, he has refused and was suspended by Leadership from participating in the Caucus until he agrees to abide by the Rules which he voted for at the beginning of the term,” the statement reads. “The Majority Caucus understands that we are stronger when unified and hopes Senator Moore will rejoin us in the future as we continue delivering winning conservative policy solutions for our state.”
Moore Response
After leaving the state capitol on Thursday, Moore didn’t hold back.
“The knives are out,” Moore exclaimed during an interview on Steve Bannon’s podcast. “They have cut me out of the Republican caucus. The senator who fought the hardest against Fani Willis, the most MAGA [Make America Great Again], the most Republican senator, has been ousted from the Republican caucus today. It’s truly unbelievable.”
Moore asserted that his fellow senators’ constituents also want them to take action against Fani Willis.
“My constituents don’t want their hard-earned tax dollars funding Fani Willis,” he emphasized.
On August 14, a grand jury issued a 98-page indictment charging former President Donald Trump and 18 co-defendants with violating Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act, along with 40 other crimes. Willis is the prosecutor in this case, alleging that the defendants’ actions in challenging the 2020 election results constituted a “racketeering criminal enterprise conspiracy.” All 19 defendants have pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Despite his suspension from the caucus, Moore expressed a sense of liberation.
“I have never felt more liberated,” he declared. “Even though I’ve been ousted from the caucus, I will continue fighting and being the most pro-MAGA senator this state has ever seen.”
Moore revealed that his colleagues accused him of making comments on his show that “have caused threats to fellow senators,” but failed to provide any evidence to support their claims.
According to Moore, they offered him the option to remain in the caucus if he stopped advocating for the special session.
“I will not compromise my freedom of speech in defense of freedom itself. That’s what got us into this mess in the first place,” he asserted, arguing that the 19 defendants are being charged for actions that should be protected under the First Amendment.
Special Session Proposal
Shortly after the indictment of President Trump and 18 others, Moore publicly accused Willis of corruption.
“As a Georgia State Senator, I am officially calling for an emergency session to review the actions of Fani Willis,” he declared in a statement, urging Georgia Governor Brian Kemp to convene a special session to investigate Willis.
“Corrupt District Attorney Fani Willis may be abusing her position of power by targeting former President Donald J. Trump. I am urging my colleagues in the Georgia legislature to join me in calling for an emergency session to investigate and review her actions, and determine if they warrant impeachment.”
For his proposal to succeed, Moore would have needed the support of three-fifths of both chambers of the state legislature. However, as of September 6, he claimed to have only secured three signatures.
“Ironically, it is the Republicans who are standing in the way,” Moore stated at the time, vowing not to let his colleagues hinder his efforts to initiate an investigation.
Separately, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), Chair of the House Judiciary Committee, is also investigating Willis for potentially pursuing politically motivated charges against federal officers, including the former President of the United States.
Jordan accused Willis of seeking personal notoriety through the case and argued that Congress has a legislative interest in potentially amending or clarifying statutes to protect federal officers from prosecution by county or state attorneys.
What specific statements or actions led to Senator Moore’s suspension from the Republican caucus?
E special session and apologized for his previous statements. However, he made it clear that he would not back down from his stance.
Moore’s suspension from the Republican caucus raises questions about the dynamics within the party. It appears that there is a divide between those who support investigating and potentially defunding the Fulton County District Attorney and those who do not. This division highlights the broader debate within the Republican Party about the integrity of the 2020 election and the actions of former President Donald Trump.
While Moore claims to represent the views of his constituents, it is important to note that his suspension does not mean he is unable to carry out his duties as a senator. He can still attend committee meetings and vote on legislation. However, he will no longer have the support and resources of the Republican caucus.
The statement released by the Georgia Senate Republicans indicates that Moore’s suspension is not solely based on his position regarding the Fulton County District Attorney. The caucus claims that Moore has violated multiple caucus rules and was given the opportunity to adhere to those rules but refused to do so. The statement does not specify which rules were broken, leaving room for interpretation.
Moore’s response to his suspension was defiant. He claimed to be the most pro-MAGA senator and expressed a sense of liberation despite being ousted from the caucus. He reiterated his commitment to fighting for his constituents and against Fani Willis. It remains to be seen how Moore will navigate his role in the Senate without the support of his caucus.
