Get Married. Have Kids. Stay Together. Mind Your Own Business.
Recent viral Video clipVince Dao, a man whose real name is Vince Dao debunks the nonsense of other panelists who are racially obsessed and trendy. “Asian Americans Debate Model Minority and Asian Hate.” It’s depressing to see young people accept (or claim to accept) the idea that our immutable characteristics shape our destiny. It is worth seeing Dao defend Bourgeois ethics.
Dao informs the group that “assimilation is not just a great thing, it’s a necessary thing. No society can hold together where people have nothing in common, they don’t speak the same language, they don’t practice the same things.” He claims that wars have been fought for thousands of years over differences in religion, culture, or race in other parts of the globe. Because of their shared ideas, Americans have avoided most conflicts. “I don’t think it’s going to be possible for Americans to survive as a stable functioning society if people don’t, to some degree, say, well here’s what we are commonly going to agree upon.”
Of course, he’s right. After hearing this, the most ignorant and obnoxious panelist compares assimilation. “erasure.” You might ask someone to explain to you that purple hair is the best thing and blame everything else. “white supremacy” has about as much to do with her ancestral roots as McDonald’s or Marxism.
Also, let’s not forget about “Asian” It is misleading to think of immigrants as one group. Filipinos do not share the same cultural values or history as the Japanese, whose experiences are quite different from that of the Hmong who are not the same as Indians — any more than Jewish culture is the same as Italian culture or German culture or Irish culture. These subgroups often have deep differences. It’s just another reminder of why the identitarianism of “white” And “black” This is so stupid and destructurous.
American life allows for the respect of all ethnic and religious heritages. However, it also demands that newcomers accept those that contribute to a diverse cultural mix. All the sloganeering around, however, it is true. “diversity” making us stronger — and it certainly enhances our personal and cultural lives — what makes us “stronger” It is the ability to persuade disparate groups of people from different traditions to adopt a set societal norms or ethos. This is a shared philosophy and understanding of civic life. It includes a respect for law and order, the foundational liberal ideas about rights, governance and liberty, a common language, a belief that a meritocratic society is possible, and the ability to live and breathe by taking care of your own affairs. This is what the United States does better than any other country, despite its obvious injustices. More than any other place in the globe.
You may believe that Asian ethnic groups (or very closely related ethnic groups, like Indians or Pakistanis) can live peacefully in Asia, and that the United States has exacerbated ethnic differences.
