Residents furious at City Council over potential influx of migrants from Denver: ‘Leave now!

Residents ⁣of Lakewood, Colorado, Express Outrage at City Council’s Actions on Migrant Crisis

Angry residents of Lakewood, a‌ Denver suburb, are voicing their frustration with the city council’s decision to engage with Denver on the migrant crisis. The council’s move comes as Denver has become the⁢ top destination for migrants crossing the U.S. southern border.

In a recent report,⁣ NBC News highlighted ⁣that nearly 40,000 migrants have arrived in Denver over ⁤the past year, ⁢putting a strain on ⁤the city’s resources and costing an estimated $180 million. This influx of migrants has sparked concerns among Lakewood residents.

“Not actively seeking sanctuary status while actively proposing to ⁢accept tax money⁢ to provide sanctuary to the unhoused is dishonest,” read a placard ⁤held up by one attendee at the Lakewood city council meeting.

Former ⁤Councilwoman ⁣Mary Janssen, a resident of Lakewood, expressed her opposition to the council’s actions, questioning⁣ when the ⁢city decided to abandon its immigration laws and become like ‍Denver.

“This transfer station, which is‌ gonna turn into a money pit and a magnet‍ for every criminal that’s coming‍ across the border, don’t we have enough problems in Lakewood without importing ’em from Denver who are saying, ‘Yeah, Lakewood, you’re stupid enough to take all of them. ⁣Take our problems, you dummies.’ It’s a money pit, and you guys are responsible for our money. Don’t screw it up! This is going to be a ‍money pit! Can’t ‌you guys think five minutes ahead? Do us a big favor and just quit. Get your sorry butts up and ⁢leave.”

A female resident emphasized that any resources, time, or money directed towards non-citizens takes away from essential services and infrastructure that the city needs. She pointed out that Colorado Springs has already rejected accepting migrants and urged Lakewood to do‌ the ⁢same.

Another attendee echoed the sentiment, emphasizing that the city manager and staff should prioritize the immediate⁤ needs of Lakewood residents. They raised concerns about car theft, shoplifting, and the increase in drugs, prostitution, and crime in the once-quiet suburb.

Furthermore, they called for action against heavy drug use, human trafficking, and the proliferation of seedy massage parlors. The attendee urged the council to take measures to prevent a mass influx of migrants and address the⁢ existing issues plaguing Lakewood.

What measures can be implemented to ensure transparency and consultation with residents regarding decisions on the migrant crisis?

Ithout any vetting and any documentation? I think that’s outrageous,” Janssen said.

Another resident, John Smith, voiced his concerns about⁤ the impact of the migrant crisis on the economy and crime rates in Lakewood.

“We already have a high crime rate in Lakewood, and this decision by the council will only worsen the situation. We cannot afford to take in more migrants without proper screening ‌and‍ without addressing the underlying issues,” Smith said.

The city council’s decision to engage with Denver on the migrant crisis has ⁤also attracted ⁣criticism for its lack of transparency and consultation with residents. Many residents argue that they ‌were not properly informed about the council’s plans and were not given an‌ opportunity to voice their concerns.

“We elected these council members to represent us and make decisions on our behalf. It is disappointing to see them making major decisions without seeking input from the⁤ community,”‌ said Sarah ⁣Johnson, a resident of Lakewood.

The frustration and disappointment among residents of Lakewood reflect a broader division in the community⁣ regarding the issue of immigration. While some ⁣argue for greater compassion and support ‌for migrants, others express concerns about ⁣the strain on resources and potential⁣ increase in crime rates.

It is important for the city council to address these concerns and engage in open dialogue with residents. Transparency and community ⁤involvement are crucial in making⁤ decisions that affect the welfare and safety of the community.

Residents of Lakewood deserve to have their ⁣voices heard and their concerns taken into account. The city council should prioritize the well-being of ‌its residents and ensure that any actions taken to address the migrant crisis are carefully evaluated and transparently communicated.

As the migrant crisis continues to impact communities across the country, it is essential for local governments to strike a balance between compassion and practicality. This requires ⁣careful ‍consideration of the resources available, the impact on the community, and the concerns of residents.

Residents ‍of Lakewood, like many other‍ communities, are grappling with the complexities of the migrant crisis. It is a challenging issue⁤ that requires thoughtful and inclusive decision-making processes. The city council ‌must recognize the urgency of addressing residents’ concerns and ⁤work towards finding solutions that benefit the entire community.

By taking ‍these steps, the city council can‌ restore trust, foster unity, and ensure that the well-being and safety ⁤of Lakewood residents‌ remain at the forefront of their decision-making process.
