Ex-Anheuser-Busch exec warns of ongoing Bud Light backlash.
Bud Light’s Troubles Continue After Controversial Partnership
A former executive for Anheuser-Busch, the company which owns Bud Light, predicts that the beer brand’s troubles will continue after a controversial partnership with self-described transgender social media influencer Dylan Mulvaney.
Controversy and Declining Sales
Bud Light faced backlash from conservatives after partnering with Mulvaney, resulting in a nearly 24% decline in sales for the week ending on May 6 compared to the same period last year. Other Anheuser-Busch brands also suffered, but to a lesser extent.
Boycott Until Meaningful Apology
Anson Frericks, a former Anheuser-Busch executive, believes that the boycott against Bud Light will continue until the brand makes a meaningful apology for the misstep. He states that consumers feel like they’re having an impact and that sales numbers are getting worse every week.
Alienating Both Sides
Anheuser-Busch has downplayed the partnership and even anheuser-busch-executive-predicts-bud-light-backlash-is-not-going-away/” title=”Ex-Anheuser-Busch exec warns of ongoing Bud Light backlash.”>solicited veteran lobbyists to win back conservatives. However, the company has also alienated leftists and owners of gay bars who threatened additional boycotts after the firm backed away from Mulvaney.
Easy to Switch Brands
Frericks notes that Bud Light’s messaging sets it apart, but it’s easy for consumers to switch to an alternative brew since it’s just water, barley, and hops. The brand was enjoyed by both Republicans and Democrats equally because it was remarkably unpolitical, making this situation a political one they should not have gotten themselves into.
Overall, the controversy resulted in a downgrade of Anheuser-Busch stock and headwinds for the company. However, some brands have seen improved sales in recent weeks.
