Local authorities arrest alleged Long Island serial killer
Local authorities made a surprising arrest in the case of the Gilgo Beach murders. The prime suspect, Rex Heuermann, was taken into custody earlier than expected after it was discovered that he had been closely following the investigation online. Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney revealed that Heuermann’s arrest came as a shock to him, despite his alleged involvement in the case.
Investigative secrecy maintained
Tierney explained that the use of a grand jury was crucial in maintaining investigative secrecy. He expressed satisfaction that law enforcement and prosecutors were able to keep the details of the case under wraps. Heuermann’s online activities played a significant role in his capture.
Online searches and disturbing behavior
According to Tierney, Heuermann used Google to search for information related to the Gilgo case. He asked specific questions about the phone evidence and why it couldn’t be traced. Additionally, he viewed pictures of the victims online and searched for information about their siblings. In one instance, he even admitted to being the killer and made threats towards one of the victims’ sisters.

Arrest and ongoing investigation
Suffolk County police apprehended Heuermann at his home last Thursday night, marking a major breakthrough in the decade-long investigation. The news of his arrest was made public the following morning. Heuermann has been charged with three of the 11 deaths associated with the case, to which he pleaded not guilty. The investigation into his criminal activities is still ongoing, as authorities work to establish any connections to the murders of eight additional victims.
