One of two girls convicted of stabbing a classmate to please the fictional character “Slender Man” requested to be released from a Wisconsin mental facility. On Wednesday, 19-year-old Anissa Weier, along with her lawyers, made the case before a judge that she no longer poses a risk to others or herself.

In 2014, Weier and her friend Morgan Geyser lured Payton Leutner to a park where Geyser stabbed Leutner multiple times as Weier cheered her on. Leutner survived the attack, while Geyser was convicted and sentenced to 40 years in a mental health institution.

Weier was sentenced to 25 years. Her attorney said she has responded well to treatment.

“She has applied herself to everything that’s available at Winnebago,” Maura McMahon, Weier’s attorney, stated. “And has done very well with it and is hopeful to move forward.”

The judge in the case said he was not prepared to make a decision on Wednesday. He called for another hearing to be scheduled for June.
