‘God Is A Redeemer’: Tennessee Governor Bill Lee Addresses The State After Covenant School Massacre
Tennessee Governor Bill Lee spoke to the state on Tuesday following the devastating shooting that claimed the lives of six individuals at The Covenant School in Nashville. The shooter, a 28-year-old woman who identified as a man, targeted the school and executed a “targeted attack,” according to police. Lee expressed his condolences to the families of the victims, including Cynthia Peak, a substitute teacher and lifelong friend of the governor’s wife, who was scheduled to have dinner with Maria Lee on the evening of the shooting.
Lee emphasized that this is a time for grieving and prayer, calling on the state to pray for the families of the victims, Covenant Presbyterian Church, and the officers who bravely responded to the scene. He also praised the selflessness of Officers Rex Engelbert and Michael Collazo of the Metro Nashville Police Department, who ran towards danger to protect innocent lives.
The governor urged the state not to react to this tragedy with hate or rage, but with wisdom, discernment, and grace. He reminded listeners that there is hope in the midst of tragedy because “God is a Redeemer” and evil can be turned for good. Lastly, he called on the state to act and work towards finding solutions to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
