‘Goodfellas’ Actor’s Widow Questions Oscar’s Memorial Snub Amid Political Bias Allegations
Dee Dee Sorvino, author and TV personality, is asking why Sunday’s Academy Awards did not include her husband. “Goodfellas” Actor Paul Sorvino, taken from their “In-Memoriam” segment. The widow expressed concern that her husband’s conservative views might have caused him to be at odds with the Hollywood socially liberal gathering. This contributed to the snub.
John Travolta, actor, presented the “In-Memoriam” Segment by paying tribute to him “Grease” Olivia Newton-John was Olivia Newton-John’s co-star, who died in August. Lenny Kravitz, an actor and song-writer, performed the song. “Calling All Angels” The awards show paid tribute to many actors as it went on. As the memorial segment was ending, viewers noticed several prominent actors and actresses were missing from the segment.
Dee Dee Sorvino criticized the Oscars for their snubs over the past few days. Fox News recently reported that she was upset by her husband’s exclusion and had to cry.
“It’s so cold and callous,” She said.
Dee Dee Sorvino claimed that her friends, as well as critics, of the Academy Awards started to reach out through social media. It was suggested that the show’s organizers had been critical of Paul Sorvino’s past support for gun right and former President Donald Trump.
“I don’t know if that’s the case,” Dee Dee spoke out about the accusations that political bias was a contributing factor to the memorial snub. “It’s just conjecture.”
For now, she said she hopes it was a simple oversight by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS)—which hosts the awards show—and not a deliberate decision motivated by politics.
“I just want to give them the benefit of a doubt that it was just a mistake,” Fox News reported that she said so.
NTD News was informed by a spokesperson from AMPAS that they receive hundreds of requests to include colleagues in the Oscars In Memoriam section. The executive committee is responsible for narrowing down the shows to fit a specific time slot. Sorvino called this defense of her husband’s exclusion from the memorial section “pathetic and ridiculous.”
One social media user suggested that Paul Sorvino and Ray Liotta would have been great partners for the memorial segment. The screen time was shared by the two of them. “Goodfellas” Tony Sirico was also exempted from the memorial segment, despite his death in July.
A.Frame on the website of AMPAS has a longer list of deceased film industry professionals, including Sorvino.
Sorvino’s Political Views
In a 2017 Fox Business interview, Paul and Dee Dee Sorvino—who has also worked as a Republican political strategist—described the political alienation they felt in Hollywood for supporting Trump.
“I think the studio people, the business people—I think they are a little cooler about it. But it’s these actors, these crazy actors… they are insane… Unless you say you hate Trump, you are not part of their club,” Dee Dee Sorvino spoke at the time.
Paul Sorvino was also interviewed in 2017 and asked him questions about his comments. “Goodfellas” Robert DeNiro was a co-star and joked about Trump’s face.
Paul Sorvino had pulled out his gun to warn Amanda’s ex boyfriend during a confrontation in 2007. This was after Amanda’s ex approached her at a hotel and began to pound on her door.
Dee Dee Sorvino posted a June photo of her husband building a double-barreled shotgun. “You liberals who are talking about gun grabs. Try and come get our guns.”
Dee Dee Sorvino stated that politics should not be a factor when AMPAS decides whether to recognize members of the film industry.
“It should be a meritocracy,” Fox News reported that she said so. “It should not be about that. And that is why it’s so upsetting, because nobody can say Paul is a bad actor. Nobody can say he was mediocre. Everybody said Paul was one of the best actors ever and that’s what he should be judged on.”
