Google criticized for ‘woke’ Christmas ad with ‘nonbinary’ influencer – Washington Examiner
Google is facing criticism for a Christmas advertisement featuring a “nonbinary” influencer, cyrus Veyssi, known for their presence on TikTok. The ad promotes Google Shopping, with Veyssi discussing the challenges of winter dryness while preparing for holiday looks. The backlash appears to stem from a perception that the ad’s choice of influencer is “woke.” This controversy highlights ongoing debates about representation and marketing strategies in the context of holiday advertising.
Google criticized for ‘woke’ Christmas ad with ‘nonbinary’ influencer
A new Google advertisement is receiving backlash for the use of a “nonbinary” influencer to promote Christmas shopping.
“I look so dry! This winter dryness is not it, especially when I have so many holiday looks to pull off,” TikTok star Cyrus Veyssi said in an Instagram post promoting Google Shopping.
“But thankfully, I know just the thing,” the beauty influencer said while using Google Shopping to find products.
“And it’s in stock nearby!” Veyssi said while discovering shopping options.
The beauty influencer is then seen finding moisturizer at a store.
“Happy holidays to me!” the beauty internet star exclaimed.
Social media users descended on Google’s woke holiday advertising campaign.
“Did Google hire the former Bud Light marketing executive to do its new Christmas shopping campaign?” an X user reacted.
Another person added, “Another out of touch company failing to read the room. Can’t avoid Google, but I don’t have [to] buy the products they pitch via woke garbage like this.”
Several X users called for no longer using Google for their searches and to start using the alternative search engine “DuckDuckGo.”
“Google is canceling women. Bizarre marketing strategy,” an X user reacted.
“Trump won. You don’t have to do this anymore,” another social media user said.
A Google spokesperson reportedly said that this post was part of larger ad campaign to have social media influencers promote Google Shopping.
Several corporations, including Bud Light and the luxury auto brand Jaguar, recently saw significant blowback when they promoted woke ads with LGBT themes.
