Google’s New AI Bot to Translate Search Results into Summaries

Google is set to revolutionize the ‌way we consume search results⁣ with its latest experiment involving a generative artificial intelligence bot. Despite facing resistance ⁣from news publishers, the⁣ tech giant announced the introduction ⁢of a new feature that will utilize a ChatGPT-esque bot to ⁤provide users with concise ⁢summaries of their⁤ search results. This exciting development will initially be available to ‍select users who opt into Google’s “Search ‍Labs” program, where new features are often tested. Starting from ⁣Tuesday, the feature⁣ will be accessible through the Google⁣ app on iOS and Android, with plans to expand to Chrome in⁢ the near ⁤future.

In a blog post, Google stated, “Our aim is to test how generative A.I. can help you navigate information online and get⁤ to the core of what you’re looking for even faster.” This innovative feature has the potential to impact reading rates and news consumption by ⁢providing users ‍with article ‍content without the need⁤ to click on the full page. However, it is important to note that the bot will not have access to content behind⁢ paywalls, and ‍publishers will have the ability to specify which pages⁣ are accessible to Google.

Google is not stopping there. The company⁤ is introducing several other enhancements ⁢to the search engine experience. For instance, users will now be able to hover over technical terms in‍ science- ‌or economics-related searches to instantly view their definitions. Additionally, coding enthusiasts will benefit‍ from a summary of coding information.

While this new ⁢feature has garnered positive feedback from users, some publishers are expressing discontent over Google training its chatbot on their news articles for free. In response, The New York‌ Times has ‌modified its terms of service ‍to prohibit companies from‍ using their content to train⁤ AI. Furthermore, Google is currently testing a product that utilizes AI to generate news articles for major outlets like The⁤ Washington⁣ Post and The Wall Street Journal.

During Google’s latest earnings call, CEO Sundar⁢ Pichai expressed ⁢optimism about the future of ⁤this ⁤AI bot, stating, “User feedback has been very positive so far, and over time, this will‌ just be how Search works.”
