Republicans criticize the budget hike for impeached Mayorkas hidden in spending package
A House Republican’s Critique of the Bipartisan Spending Deal
A House Republican called out the bipartisan spending deal that would give Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas’s office a generous $27 million funding increase, despite the recent impeachment vote against him.
The Irony Unveiled by Rep. Andy Ogles
Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN) highlighted the ironic situation Republicans find themselves in by planning to allocate $363 million to Mayorkas’s office for the upcoming year, up from $336 million in the previous year.
“Feb 2024, Republicans: ‘Let’s impeach Mayorkas!’ March 2024, Republicans: ‘Let’s give Mayorkas’ office an 8% pay increase!’” Ogles shared in a post.
As a Senate-confirmed department secretary, Mayorkas receives a fixed pay of $246,400 for fiscal 2024, matching other Cabinet secretaries’ salaries.
The $27 million increase in funding for the DHS secretary’s office will provide additional resources for operational expenses.
However, the bill does not provide a detailed breakdown of how the $363 million will be utilized except for being designated for the “DHS Office of the Secretary and Executive Management,” as per a spokesman for Ogles.
The DHS has not responded to requests for comment on the matter.

A vote on the DHS funding bill, part of a “minibus” package comprising six appropriations bills, is set for Friday. The House’s approval relies on two-thirds of members supporting the deal, necessitating Democratic and Republican backing.
Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX) expressed to the Washington Examiner on Thursday his refusal to endorse the plan due to the absence of policy reforms to counter the influx of illegal immigrants from Mexico.
