GOP Congressman Claims Chinese Communist Party Operatives Hacked His Emails
Nebraska Republican Rep. Don Bacon: Chinese Communist Party Hacked My Emails
Nebraska Republican Representative Don Bacon revealed on Tuesday that he was informed by the FBI about the Chinese Communist Party hacking into his emails. This alarming news follows previous reports of suspected Chinese hackers gaining access to communications from officials at the State Department and the Commerce Department.
“I thank the FBI for notifying me that the CCP hacked into my personal and campaign emails from May 15th to June 16th of this year. The CCP hackers utilized a vulnerability in the Microsoft software, and this was not due to ‘user error,'” Bacon said on X.
Bacon emphasized that he was not the only victim of this cyber operation and highlighted the active role of the Chinese government in conducting cyber espionage. He pledged to work tirelessly to ensure that Taiwan receives the necessary military equipment, including the $19 billion in weapons backlog they’ve ordered, to deter any potential aggression from China. As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, Bacon has consistently advocated for increased U.S. military support for Taiwan.
The hacking of federal agencies, which was first discovered in June, became public knowledge in July. The Commerce Department promptly responded to the compromise of Microsoft’s Office 365 system after being notified by Microsoft. The breach also affected the communications of U.S. Ambassador to China Nicholas Burn and Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia Daniel Kritenbrink.

In March, the White House released a framework highlighting the urgent need for enhanced cybersecurity. The framework warned that China, North Korea, Russia, and Iran were actively working to strengthen their cyber capabilities. According to the framework, China poses the most significant and persistent threat to both government and private sector networks, with the intent and power to reshape the international order.
