GOP demands records after discovering Biden’s use of fake names and alternate emails as VP.
House Oversight Committee Chairman Calls for Release of Documents and Communications from Biden’s Time as VP
In a move that could have significant implications, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer has called on the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) to provide documents and communications from President Joe Biden’s tenure as vice president. Specifically, Comer is seeking information that overlaps with his son Hunter Biden’s business activities in Ukraine.
Comer’s requests, outlined in a letter to NARA, include communications sent or received by Joe Biden using pseudonyms. The committee is particularly interested in any documents or communications that mention pseudonyms such as Robert Peters, Robin Ware, and JRB Ware. These pseudonyms were reportedly used by Biden in emails recovered from Hunter’s laptop, according to the New York Post.
Additionally, Comer is seeking any documents or communications involving Hunter Biden, Eric Schwerin, or Devon Archer, who were Hunter’s business partners.
Examining the Relationship Between Biden’s Official Duties and Family’s Business Interests
Comer’s request comes amid growing concerns about the potential overlap between Biden’s official government duties and his family’s business dealings. In a news release, Comer highlighted evidence that suggests Biden’s family had significant access to his official activities, despite his claims of a strict separation.
“Joe Biden has stated there was ‘an absolute wall’ between his family’s foreign business schemes and his duties as Vice President, but evidence reveals that access was wide open for his family’s influence peddling. We already have evidence of then-Vice President Biden speaking, dining, and having coffee with his son’s foreign business associates.”
Comer’s request for documents and communications aims to shed light on the extent of this access and potential influence peddling.
Seeking Clarity on Biden’s Speech in Ukraine
One specific area of interest for Comer is a speech Biden delivered to the Ukrainian Rada on December 9, 2015. Comer is requesting all drafts of this speech to determine if any changes were made after a phone call between Hunter Biden and Burisma executives.
According to testimony from Devon Archer, a business partner of Hunter Biden, the executives asked Hunter to contact Washington, D.C. regarding pressure they were facing from Ukrainian prosecutors. Five days after this call, Biden delivered his speech in Ukraine, calling for reform of the general prosecutor’s office, which was investigating potential corruption at Burisma.
Comer’s request for drafts of the speech aims to determine if any lines about reforming the prosecutor’s office were added after the phone call, potentially indicating a connection between Biden’s official actions and his family’s business interests.
Concerns About National Security and Foreign Influence
Comer’s letter to NARA also highlights broader concerns about the potential risks to American national security and interests posed by foreign nationals seeking access and influence through business relationships with high-profile political figures’ immediate family members.
The House Oversight Committee seeks to address deficiencies in the current legal framework regarding ethics laws and disclosure of financial interests related to the immediate family members of Vice Presidents and Presidents. Comer emphasizes the need for legislative solutions to mitigate these risks.
As the investigation unfolds, the release of these documents and communications could provide crucial insights into the relationship between Biden’s official duties and his family’s business activities.
